Cooking right now a beef stew. Something I haven't made (or eaten) in ages. Was planning on making it in my elec crock pot (looking for some good recipes for slow cookers). Very simple recipe and I had all the ingredients less one..allspice. Looked up a substitute on line 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp cloves and 1/4 tsp nutmeg... I did have Apple pie allspice but don't think that would have worked. I'll let you know if it's a keeper so far smells and looks good.
So what's on your stove?

For 40 years my beef stew recipe has been from The New Home & Gardens recipe book (page 206). It calls for a dash of allspice or cloves. I was just thinking about making it this week maybe on a night when we have the grandkids. BH&G still has almost the same recipe on line. www.bhg.com/recipe/meat/old-time-beef-stew/Mine doesn't have lemon juice, calls for more salt (which I always cut back) and makes the allspice optional. I prefer to use a heavy stew pot rather than a crock pot so I can brown the beef. No cooking for us tonight. It's our son's birthday & we're eating with him.

old fashioned beef steef.pdf (55.5 KB) That is almost identical to mine. I think they stole it. (LOL) Mine is from "The Fanny Farmers Cookbook" and is called Old-Fashioned Beef Stew. No garlic or sugar in mine. I didn't have lemon juice so used red wine vinegar instead. (I'll scan it when I get a chance so you can compare) Only salt in mine is in the flour mixture to coat the meat 1 tsp.

Both look great but I don't have enough carrots or small white onions but do have some small potatoes so I can't make it tonights.
