Kroger's just completely remodeled our store and upgraded their meat and seafood departments. I found Capitol Half Smokes in the meat case. Half Smokes are found mainly around Washington DC and Baltimore. They are a slightly smoked sausage link, with just a hint of heat. They make an awesome alternative to a chili dog. If you find them in YOUR local market, give them a try. I promise that you will not be disappointed. Half smokes are also good when sliced into coins, fried lightly in half butter, half bacon grease, and then saute'ed with roughly chopped cabbage and onions.
I also was thrilled to find lobster tails for $5 each. I bought 8 of them. Two apiece today along with salt potatoes and a salad and two apiece to be frozen for another treat in a week or so. The tails are about 10-12 ounces apiece. Normally we have seen small tails, frozen, and priced at about $11 per pound. We seldom see fresh or live lobster here. Makes me want to jump in the truck and spend a weekend on Cape Cod, eating huge whole lobsters with a nut cracker and a bib as standard equipment. We always spent a weekend in Hyannis this time of year in a harbor front hotel. We have a couple of favorite restaurants there where you can eat on an outside deck, overlooking the ocean. The seafood guy at Krogers was telling me that the lobster prices are down because there seems to be an over abundance of lobster coming to market this season.
Does the seafood guy still park a truck in the area shopping center parking lots and sell live lobster and fresh shrimp? I used to buy lobsters from a truck that would park in the Mohawk Acres plaza in Rome.
