I think it's time to transfer iTunes from my old XP machine to my wife's Win 8 notebook. Has anyone here done a transfer? When I go to the Apple help site they show a transfer using an external hard drive (which should create a backup) to be a 7 part process with the individual parts having as many as eight steps. This does not sound like something I should attempt while watching grandchildren or drinking wine.

I don't have an iPad but my friends do. Let me check with them for you. I thought there was share now where family members can share not transfer. I only have an iPod touch but I'm guessing it should be the same since the Touch, and Mini are only smaller versions of the same.

Actually I mis-typed, I'm tech support for my wife's iPod not iPad. Everything currently resides on my decade old XP computer & I want to move it all to our newest computer which is her Win 8 notebook. The Apple support seems overly complicated. Among the things I don't want to mess up are the old records I've transferred to digital.

When I have the time and am in the mood, I put a record on my turntable, run the output through patch cords to the audio card on my computer and use a program called Audacity to convert it to a digital file. It's a slow process. I normally sample the loud and soft passages of each track to set the recording levels and then I have to play the track in real time in order to record it.
It goes a lot faster if my wife hands me a CD and says, "Put this on my iPod."
In any case, what I want to do is transfer iTunes and the entire library (music purchased through iTunes, ripped from CDs or converted from vinyl) to a new computer.

All I ever did was download iTunes from Apple.com and my library was there or whatever was on my iTunes. Is the library going to be under your name or your wife's.

Transferring Purchased Content to Another Computer You can transfer content on iPod touch that was purchased using iTunes on one computer to an iTunes library on another authorized computer. The computer must be authorized to play content purchased using your Apple ID. Authorize a computer: Open iTunes on the computer and choose Store > Authorize Computer. Transfer purchased content: Connect iPod touch to the other computer. In iTunes, choose File > Transfer Purchases from iPod touch.
I am guessing this would be the same for an ipod.
Were thse the steps you were following .......http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329

Good point about the account names, I'll have to make sure I keep everything consistent. Barb has 2 iPods, a small one I gave her years ago and a more recent Touch. Very little of the music was purchased from iTunes, most was ripped from CDs or recorded from vinyl albums. The link you provided was from the same site as the one I was reading but I was going to use an external hard drive as a transfer device.
It's not a time critical mission yet. My goal is to have all working files and programs off that machine by next April.

Most of my music is from ripped CD's I buy and then add to my library or import to my library. I prefer to buy hard copies of all my music to make sure I don't loose anything and can share if I want. Speaking of iPods I need to call and make an appt with Genius to get my Home Button fixed. I'll run your question by them to see what they have to say when I go.
