I was sitting at my PC while listening to a computer program on the radio and someone called in about their anti virus which in turn made me glance down at my too bar. I noticed my AVG button was gone so I looked to see if it was hidden. Not there!!! So went to my programs and tried to open it and it would not open...I got a message instead that said something to the effect of software blocking my event viewer. I then uninstalled my AVG and reinstalled it but still got same message and no AVG.
So then I called in to ask the PC guru Nick about it and he said ,,,"oh oooohhhh run the tango. (www.securitytango.com)Meaning do the virus dance. One of the steps is to run anti virus which I can't do. So I uninstalled AVG and installed AVast. That works. I did a full scan and it did not find anything but I still could have a virus there someplace.
Just before this my IE was giving me a hard time so I unsintalled that and it was reinstalling the updates on its own. Was wondering if that might have disabled my anti virus. I think I had 10 or 11 version not sure but when I uninstalled it it started with IE6 got up 8. Hasn't updated more since AVAST.
Does anyone here know what might have happened. So far my PC runs a bit better (not IE issues)..yet!!!!!
One more thing ....while looking for a file in documents I noticed a folder named Facebook_Images and tried to click on it open and see what that was. As I did so my Virus Alert came up and quarantined it. I have not a clue how it got there or what that was about. Hope it's not from FB.

Go to this site and use the free download for Malwarebytes, it will redirect you to a CNET site for the download.
Just follow the instructions a run a full scan. I will probably take a half hour to an hour to run but it will clean up anything that might be left behind. If anything is left just check the boxes provided in the results and it will then remove them when you restart.
This is not a real time protection program but is great for cleaning out anything which may be left behind that avast! can't grab. Let me know how you make out.
I am not a fan of IE, at all. It recently updated itself on my main PC and I had to uninstall it as the newest version is not compatible with the Red Prairie/Blue Cube site we use for work. When I backed up to the last version it ruined the cab files that were installed and won't reinstall then. Now I have to use one of our other PC's to access my work data bases.

Chris, I have used Avast for the last few years now and have not had any issues with it. I have been amazed by the lack of any issues since Ralph loaded Avast, CCleaner, and Malwarebytes on my machine when he did some work on it for me a few years ago. I have had no issues with viruses or other such problems since. When I had paid antivirus soft ware I had problems. I had Norton, I had, McAfee, and I had a program I bought at Walmart years ago for $39. All allowed viruses to sneak by, while the FREE Avast has never failed to stop any crippling viruses, and Malwarebytes has identified and quarantined any other invaders. I run the CCleaner every day or so to dump the cookies and browsing history, the Avast scans automatically, and I run the Malwarebytes once a week. I only tried AVG for a short time, and the version that I had installed was a 30 day trial of some sort. When I got a notice that the trial period was over, rather than buy the paid version, I downloaded Avast and have had it ever since.
I have been using Firefox for a browser for several years, and I recently loaded Google Chrome, but have not really played with it much. IE is on my desktop but I never use it. I would be interested to know if Chrome actually has any notable benefits to be realized over Firefox for navigating the forum and other sites. I never liked IE and haven't used it since Dave and Ralph originally recommended Firefox back around 2009 or so.

Thanks guys. I have Malwarebytes. I like how Avast actually talks to you when it does something. I see I have CCleaner on my machine but not sure I have used it yet.
I just logged into my banking which just recently updated their security. When I did I got a message it uses Chrome plugins and that I was using an out dated browser. (Don't understand why I get that message if I have a current IE) I also have Firefox loaded. I am not huge fan of Chrome so don't use it.....much. If forced to use something other than IE it would be Firefox.

I just tried to open my Malwarebytes and I got the same message I got for my Antivirus.... I have no idea what is going on other than a virus. Avast is not catching it but seems my programs are being disabled.

If you have your computer save passwords CCleaner will sometimes remove them. I use one site which requires my user ID, password and a key which was snail mailed to me. Whenever I run CCleaner I have to re-enter the key. One way to end run malware which is preventing an anti-virus from running is to run it from a flash drive. A procedure for doing that is here: www.ehow.com/how_6905631_run-antivirus-flash-drive.html(Disclaimer: I've never done that.) A couple other programs I've used are Spybot & Ad-Aware. They sometimes find things that Avast & Malwarebytes haven't.

Well CB something is going on here. I came home and ran my Super Anti Spyware since my Malware is non functional. It found and quarantined some items and then when I looked to see what it scanned it said my definition updates failed. So I tried to run definitions again and would not let me. I then went to reboot and noticed I had no Internet connection. So did the run of unplug replug. turn off reboot and still nothing. So then I went to check the phone jack and it was connected so I picked up my phone and no dial tone. I then went and got my trust worthy old princess phone and plugged that in. Well as you can see I am back on line but no phone . So I guess till I get this figured out I will need to unplug computer to use the phone and vise versa. Maybe rain storm kicked out my connection. (someone upstairs does not like me)
Tomorrow I am calling my computer guy to have him straighten out this PC and sweep it for bugs. I have not had one of these types of dilemmas in ages. (aka...Mrs. Edward Munch)

It sounds like you have run into a Trojan that has activated itself, and you're not going to get rid of it unless you have someone familiar with Trojan removal look at it. A lot of gnashing of teeth involved, but it can be removed and your system put back to normal.

The phone business has me a little puzzled. It could be a spearate problem. I assume you get internet & phone from the cable company. Mine has a modem near where the cable enters the house. From there a telephone wire runs to the basement where ATT/Verizon had their entrance and there is a distribution system to the whole house. The modem has a set of LEDs indicating status of various systems. More than once I've gone through the unplug/plug/reboot routine with that box.
The kind of sweeps Ralph described are necessary for some deeply buried stuff but tricky, beyond my level of expertise.

Got that right! Challenging to work on but tricky as can be. Those are the one I actually have to work at to get cleaned out.
