New program tonight on ABC. Extreme Weight Loss---A 362 lb 34 year old man and his 290 lb year old wife attempt to lose weight together.

Why would anyone watch this and who thinks up this stuff for a TV program. Is this entertainment or what.

Well, it's cheap to produce. So we know why they air it. I used to think the only people who watched these shows didn't have cable and so were watching what used to be called LOP, or Least Objectionable Programming. This was a concept that helped explain why a third of viewing homes were watching a particular program that was of poor quality and/or interest. The viewers had made the decision to watch television that night and the successful show was the one they would dislike the least.

But I know people now who watch this crap even though they have a choice of 200 other cable channels. So it must be that all 200 channels are so bad that a show about losing weight could still draw an audience. The success of a weight loss show may be saying more about what's on the other 200 channels than about the viewers it attracts.

I read something about a new drama "Siberia" based on a fictional reality show. If someone has watched it don't bother trying to catch me up. I'm busy.

Dave and CB your statement was just perfect. I flipped through the channels I have and it was a toss up between a 1996 repeat of Mother Angelicum on EWTN or the repeat of an episode of the second season of The Big Bang Theory. I watched Big Bang--his Mother arrives to get Sheldon out of his crazy mood and is able to get Sheldons job back for him. At the end of the program the experiment Sheldon was working on worked--gold fish that glow in the dark.
