I saw a cute quote on Facebook this morning that reminded me of some of the musicians that I knew back in the 60's. Music was in their blood and profit was not a factor in their quest to make music in a public venue.
The definition of a musician:
A person who puts $5000 worth of equipment in a $500 car to travel 100 miles for a $50 gig.
LOL. Can any of you relate to that scenario?

I also have been there and done that. Back in 60s with Wille and New Yorkers , it made for good times to remember.

Jay, very happy to hear the reunion will be at the beach again. Had a good time last year but not as nice as at the beach. Yesterday's Royal is a great place to hold the reunion. Plenty of room there for sure. Keep us informed, kiddo.

Yesterday's Royal has great ice cream too! If ya don't want a beer ya can go in the other room and get a banana split, haha. My oldest son was a bouncer there for a short time back in the late 80's. When we had our camp in Verona Beach, one of our favorite things to do in the afternoon after a boat ride was to tie up to the pier and go have ice cream at Yesterday's Royal before returning to the marina. We were the one's with the little 19ft cuddy cabin, tied between the REAL boats, haha. Wish we could attend, but we probably won't be up this summer. It's doubtful that Kathy will be ready to travel that far and we will probably just take the 5th wheel and camp on Watts Bar Reservoir just West of Knoxville for vacation this year.

We are talking about the old days and the garage bands. I well remember when my uncle and some others I knew at the time were so dedicated to making music that they pretty much did exactly that. There were gigs that paid about enough to pay for the gas to get there and back, and financed the breakfast with the girls afterwards at an all night diner.
I am sure that now a days a union musician makes a pretty respectable wage, and I don't belittle the occupation at all. Did you not happen to pass through that stage when the music was so important that you would have PAID to play a venue if you had to, just to get the exposure and enjoy the limelight for a night?
You are in a place where there are opportunities to play real music. Our kind of music. Where as in Utica, there are not that many live music venues around that play decent music any more. The last live band I was subjected to in Utica was after my sons wedding, at the Electric Company on Varick St. I would have gladly paid that band to leave so we could plug in the Juke Box.

you got that right battle of the bands was nothing but to get free bands to play for FREE and we all did it because our heads were bigger then are hearts.we won we won yea you won nothing but money out of your own pockets to do the battles of the bands.I play with a group called REDDOG and FRIENDS four nights a month and we are always booked two months ahead.check it out we are on facebook if you ever go there. As far as the unions down here it's not like NY use to be if you did not have your union card Grandville Kelly would jump all over your ass and you had to pay up then or not go on stage.I strill have all my cards from 1963 till the early 70's. $ 25.00 every three months.Limelight we were lucky to get a candle light near our band...lol....Even when tony Cee was our agent we booked out at $2,500 to $3,500 per five days and always came home broke. He only took 10% from us, he was my sons godfather so i had him on my side...lol...Sometimes we had six guys to eight guys in the band so it was good money then if we did not spend it on girls and drugs and booze....lol and getting there for the candle light...LMAO...thanks fo the reminder..love it. as I know you do the old days in Utica
