WKTV has the information and had a crew on the scene.

Where the heck is the OD reporter that should have been able to at least obtain the info that WKTV was able to put on their news and website. I first read the story on the OD page. When it didn't provide details, I wondered if WKTV would be reporting on the incident. Sure enough. WKTV had taken the initiative to send a team to the scene and to get the story.
The OD is failing partly due to the fact that their reporters sit on their asses and take information from scanners and telephone calls. They will report on this incident "later." It may be later today when a reporter finally calls the State Police back, it may be after the OD reads the WKTV report, or it may never be followed up on at all. The OD lost it's best photographer when they lost Nancy Ford. They have lost several GOOD reporters that were ambitious enough to get into their car and PURSUE a story, who have moved on either due to conflict with management, or moved on to bigger and better jobs elsewhere. It is frustrating to read something in the OD and to find that they never follow up or provide further info as the story develops.
If WKTV could put a team on scene from Smith Hill, the OD certainly could have had someone in Herkimer within about 15 minutes. In fact the OD has an office in Herkimer on N. Main Street and a person that sporadically reports on valley news from that location. Seems to me that if you have people on the payroll, drawing their pay anyway, a paper should be able to put reporters on the street to actually cover stories of interest to the public, and to provide a few photos to support the story.
