Anybody a NASCAR fan? I was a faithful watcher when Rusty Wallace was racing, but after he retired I stopped watching every week. I did watch the Bud Shootout on Sat. night. Glad Jr. won. It's all so different now with the new cars and all the rules. Everybody gets in a tizzy if one of the drivers slips and says "shit" on TV. No more "bump and go" either. I'll probably watch the Daytona 500, but I don't know who I'll be cheering for.

No, I'm not. HOWEVER, I live in the middle of Nascar country, so everyone around me is a fan and my son loves cars so his room is all decorated in Nascar stuff.

Rusty was the man. I live in NASCAR country more than any of you, nana nanana! I am about 2-3 miles from the Bristol Motor Speedway. I watch on TV and when they wreck and go under caution, I go out in the carport and sit, and when I hear the cars again, I come back in and watch the race. The sound comes through a little hollow (Valley to you yankees, haha) and is so loud in our carport, that you have to put a finger in your ear to hear on a telephone.
Anybody closer to NASCAR than that? LOL!
I think you are going to see Junior up front alot this year. His step mother was screwing him big time, and Earnhart Inc has a serious problem with engines that needs to be corrected. He is my new driver to root for. Jarret is a great guy, but he and Mark Martin are both past their desire to push hard or take chances. I don't blame them. They are both going to be part of NASCAR history.
Junior won't have to hunt for a drafting partner anymore, as we saw during the shootout. He will be either in the front or pushing one of his team mates across the line. It is going to be a great season!! I can't wait!

I loved watching Rusty and Dale go at it. It's a funny story how I started watching NASCAR. I love the band Alabama and they were doing a farewell tribute for some guy named Richard Petty. So I watched it one night and thought I'd watch the race to see this poor old guy's last race. haha. So there was Dale hitting Rusty in the back end to move him out of the way. Thus started my love/hate relationship with Dale Earnhart and my love of Rusty.

Some guy named Richard Petty? Some guy??? Ahem, that's the KING you're referring to. Bow down, knave! I was a big time Rusty fan too. I've taken plenty of ribbing at tracks from goofs wearing 3s and 8s on their hats who stumbled up to me in their typical drunken stupor and asked: "Do y'all know what Wallace means? We All Look Like Assholes Chasing Earnhardt. Har har har." My response: "Yeah, that's a real knee slapper there Clem. Love the mullet."

If it's on tv I'll watch it but I have to be drinking Bud Light and eating my Slim Jims! ;-) No, though, I never got into it, but since my son likes it we watch on occasion. Maybe we'll even go to a race because I'm sure he'd love that and we don't live that far away from where a lot of the races are! And Richard Childress makes good wine. :-) We live very close to that and last summer we were at a baseball game where they were giving out free samples. www.childressvineyards.com/home.asp

Yes, frankcor "some guy" named Richard Petty. That's all he was to me at the time. I took a lot of ribbing too, but that one year, man you couldn't touch him. He won every race almost. He was cute too! Ya had to love to hate Dale and I cried when he died. The wreck just didn't seem that bad.

Dale Sr. was the man that I also, loved to hate. He was a great driver, but his aggresive style of wrecking others to get to the line, didn't set well with me. I love Rusty Wallace, and have met him in person. He owns car dealerships here in the south, and also appeared a couple of times at "family race nights" downtown here in Bristol for autographs.
Richard Petty and the 43 car were always up front in the old days. He was the Dale Earnhart of the 60's and 70's and never faded into the background until the day he retired. He raced hard til the end.
I think that when Dale Sr. was killed, it took some of the fire out of the bellies of others such as Rusty, Dale Jarrett and Mark Martin. It brought a realization of their mortality to mind, and some sense of caution, that made them drive less aggressively and settle for fewer wins.
I think caution comes with age, and good sense. It is a sport where the young guns are the hotshots and as they age, they become more cautious and aren't quite so apt to "let the tail go with the hide" to get a win.
I don't care how much safety equipment they put in a car, I cannot imagine going 200mph, much less spinning out or hitting other cars and the wall at that speed. I would have to wear fireproof depends under my firesuit, haha.
I did 160 once across Walker Rd between Utica and Poland, back in the 60's. My friend had a studebaker avante, and we left the Shamrock in N Utica at 20 minutes til 2, and made last call at Kuyrahoora Inn in Poland with time to spare. If the car is still on the road, it probably still had my finger grips indented in the dashboard. The telephone poles were going by like a picket fence, haha.

Gosh Kim, Bud light and Slim Jims?? I had a saint bernard in the 60's that used to go to the bar with me. People would give him Genessee beer and slim jims, and when we started for home, I would have to stop and get out of the car gagging, when the slim jims and beer started working. Haha.
Your husband probably doesn't LET you watch NASCAR unless you watch it outdoors on the patio, hahahahaha.
PS: You are MUCH better looking, but the digestive tracts are most likely similar. Don't be offended Kiddo, as the only comparison would be diet and exhaust emissions, LOL!

Clipper, so I take it you're not a fan of NASCAR-style surf-n-turf? (Slim Jims and a can of anchovies)
Kim, free wine at a baseball game??? Now, here I've been thinking all these years that there's no way to improve the game of baseball. How wrong was I?
If you decide to catch a race (and I strongly encourage you to do so) be sure to bring ear protection for your son if you plan on being close to cars while they're running. I'm appalled at how many people bring their kids to the tracks without ear protection, not realizing they're causing high frequency hearing losses. I don't know if your boy's implant could be damaged or not so you might want to check it out first.
Folks could do a lot worse than expose their kids to NASCAR. Consider how long a corporate sponsor would tolerate their name on the door of the Alan Iverson car? NASCAR drivers get spanked in public for cussing or for being stopped for DWI, not praised. Donny Allison and Cale Yarborough wouldn't survive long in today's NASCAR; Mark Martin is a much better role model.

Yeah, free wine...they were promoting the vineyards...it was great! If you ever come down here for a visit in the summer we'll have to go to a game! Minor league team and they pretty much suck, but the have a great stadium and the games are fun!
No, his implant wouldn't be hurt at all. If the noise is too loud for him all he has to do is take off his coil and then he can't hear a thing! Sometimes I wish I had an implant!
