Sexy and dangerous. I love it! Whoever is managing these ladies has done a great job developing an aura around the team that is unforgettable already. And you gotta love this spirit: I gotta get to a practice soon.

I used to attend rollerderby in the 60's on the west coast. It is a hard hitting action sport like hockey and will garner a large audience if promoted correctly. It is colorful and rowdy like professional wrestling and fun to watch!
Good luck to the effort to make it happen in Utica!

this new version is definitely not as fake as the previous incarnations of the sport. it does take skill to skate and maneuver correctly. there is a goal to gain points, and with the photo that frank posted, it's definitely not staged, especially when it comes to injuries! yes, there are personas like wrestling, and promotions like wrestling, but many women take it seriously too.

That foot injury doesn't look fake.

Just to let you know, the photo is very tame, the young lady in the pic had to have surgery and have pins put in her leg. She broke it just above the ankle and it was dangling. Luckily for the team, she wasn't pissed off about it happening, she's pissed off about missing practices!

After about 6 months of practice and training, I read in the OD today that the Utica Clubbers roller derby team is meeting a team from Syracuse at the Auditorium on Tuesday night. I know there was alot of controversy about it in February, but I have watched roller derby in California. It is a rough and tumble sport, with the kind of excitement of professional wrestling and Ice Hockey. Lots of action and excitement from beginning to end. Not for everybody, but for anyone looking for something different to do, check it out.
Anything that brings people out to the Aud and generates ticket dollars cannot be all bad. Hopefully their posters won't feature anyone flipping the bird, like the photo above.
