Lots of great old pictures of Barneveld from way back when. I lived in Barneveld from 1950 until 1953. I started school there in the school house shown in the photo.
It was a two room school, but when I was there only one classroom was in use. A wonderful teacher named Ethyl Taylor was the teacher. She taught grades one through six. Each row of seats was a grade, and it was a wonderful learning experience.
My dad had taught me to read and to do simple addition and subtraction before I ever attended school. When I entered school at age five I was allowed to read with the second grade reading circle and do arithmetic with the first graders. I never actually was required to attend kindergarten. The entire top floor was a gymnasium. We would go up there during recess and play basketball, kickball and dodge ball. Everything including music and art was taught by Mrs Taylor.
Everyone went to either Barneveld, Prospect, or Stittville school houses until they completed the 6th grade. They then were bussed to Holland Patent to the "big school."
Having lived in Trenton Falls, Gravesville, and Barneveld in my younger days, I was drawn back there as an adult. I lived on Hinckley Lake, Kayuta Lake, rented a mobile home outside of Barneveld for a short time, and lived in the village of Remsen when I met Kathy. It is just one more part of upstate NY that pulls at my heart. Sooo many memories of that area when the area was thriving and enjoying better times.
