This was chilling. I think he gave the speech this past August. I posted it as a thread on the CNY Forum in the Politics thread last December, I think. Corner, I agree with your quotation marks around the word "friendship." But I have always believed, despite the strong Israeli lobby in New York and Washington, that our reason for aiding Israel is self-centered. They are our footprint in the middle east, that part of the world on which depends our economy and well being, at least before the heavy boot print of Iraq. If our allegiance to them is blind, the blinders are dollar signs.

unfortunately you are right about the dollar signs but it is a one way stream from us to them.. they are no different from any body else in the mid east they are just another faction of arabs just without the oil.. we put our money on the wrong horse

Actually, I've always thought of them as a faction of Long Islanders and Germans, too. But, whatever, they're not the first country that we've propped up for our own interest. We can see the American lives lost when we decide to do it ourselves, as in Iraq. It sure was nice when we owned the Shah of Iran and could call the shots as we saw them without getting our hands dirty there.

There is a more significant difference. Israel is a free democracy. I value democracy -- it isn't free.

Newt was never a big fan of mine, but I have to agree with him. I thought it was well said with more than a general concern. I just want to add that Republicans and Democrats voted for this war. We all wanted payback for 911. Bush stated from the beginning that it would not be an easy war. Some of this ugly war has to be blamed on the UN Inspectors and Congress. This should probably reserved for it's own thread.

I think he may be onto something. Geesh, do you really think things are that way? I am wooried about this. Should I be heading for the bomb shelter?
He is "dead" on if you ask me. He makes alot of valid points and raises some serious questions. I always liked something about him. I think I know what it is now, it's the in your face type of air he has about him and he speaks the truth which is hard to hear and swallow. But then again, how do you get attention and results unless you are bold and brash and show some intestinal fortitude.

;D Todd's post pretty well gives us a realistic assessment of both parties responsibilities and approvals of the war. Can't blame it all on Bush now can we?

wcup, you're absolutely right but I wouldn't head for the bomb shelters. At the right moments in time, the American people have put fear aside, stepped up to the plate and took care of business. I would have thought 911 would have been such a moment. Apparently it's going to take more.
Pearl Harbor and 911 each killed around 3,000. What will be our response if the next time it is 30,000?
Or 300,000?
