Why did they have to kill it? Why wasn;t the Animal Control people called in?
Is this another example of macho policemen shooting off their guns?

According to them, when they cornered it in the yard it charged at them. Leaving them no choice.
This is recording to there report. I am by no means condoning it, but at 5ft long and 150 pounds it seemed in unenviable. Animal control was there but probably not soon enough.

Thanks for the additional information, Todd. For a wild animal to come into a congested, noisy and crowded City, maybe this animal was sick or even worst, had rabies.
Once a wild animal charges at you, you have no other choice but to kill it (if you have the weapon to do it with).
Where did this Cougar even come from? I thought they lived out in the Western States - not in Illinois!

Just because it looks like a cat doesn't mean its nice and cuddly- this cat WILL rip your arm off. I have not be much direct evidence of this for some years but apparently they may be making a come back up here. If you have any missing pets you'll know why.

That is correct Ryan. I have heard that there are cougars making a rebound in the northeast. If it looks like a cat, but is as big as a large dog, give it up and run like hell. Don't try to domesticate it! You can't afford 20# of catfood a day, haha.
There have been recent incidents on cable channels that show victims of cougar attacks. One lady was mountain biking and was attacked. These damn things are not the least bit afraid. They are very aggressive, and nasty. You bet your ass if it looks at me and envisions lunch, I will be shooting it, and envisioning it stuffed in my den, haha. No second thoughts about it.

If my Lucy was that large, she'd need to be put down in a hurry.
