UTICA — A Utica man faces a felony charge after he fought with police following a foot chase, authorities said.

At about 2 p.m. Wednesday, officers conducted a vehicle stop on Gold Street in Cornhill and noticed possible drug activity in the car, police said.

When they asked passenger Mikal Ameen, 33, of John Street, to exit the vehicle, he fled but was caught a short distance away, police said.

Ameen then fought to break free, during which time the officer suffered an injury, police said.Ameen was taken into custody with the assistance of another officer.

Ameen was charged with felony second-degree assault, two counts of misdemeanor resisting arrest and the violations of harassment and unlawful possession of marijuana, police said.

Now that they have less officer's they need to be much more aggressive. This guy and all like him should just be given an order to Stop or you will be shot and they shoot the guy dead.

I don’t think that having less on the street (if that even happens) will make them any more aggressive, nor should it.
I am sure they will be much more cautious than before, but they still have policies and laws to follow themselves. Use of lethal force on a fleeing suspect has severe limitations. Simply running away from an officer during a traffic stop is not one of them.

It seem that prison doesn't work and even the death sentence doesn't work to control violence. I was thinkin that maybe if new laws were passed to give police wider methods like yelling stop or I will shoot, that maybe crime would go down. Of course if the person shot dies then the crime rate will automatically go down. Red neck philosophy 101.

There are two forms of prevention, Punishment and fear of i as a deterance. Hard to generalize how the typical perpetrator view these but many of us may just be statistical parts of the gauging of either. I have my own moral guidelines that steer me one direction or another but Im also cognoscente of the punishment for breaking the ones im not in tune with the rules of society with. Im about to do my taxes, this is day two of a 3 or four day venture that will tap every reserve and then some yet I will report my earnings and will not distort my expenditures.

I don't believe they are due the money I will send them on tuesday, they certainly haven't made my life a damn bit better over the last year and Im not in nearly as sound shape as this time last year but I will pay because I don't wanna go to jail!!!! This kid had a bag of weed and now he has a felony assault pending. He's gonna do hard time for a $200 bag of grass and it will cost the taxpayers 100K to prosecute and Incarcerate him for it and a police officer was injured needlessly. Maybe the bigger question is why does this state continue to create these unlawful businesses by banning something they have never been successful at curbing ever?

Deterrence works for me but it didn't for Bernie Madoff, Al Capone, Social services cheats or even Senator Edwards, they don't fear the punishment and never will.

All that said, its not a crime punishable by death to run from the authorities, not smart but its even less smart to assume the authorities are 100% correct and justified every time either, those odds just cant be expected, impossible. As has been found out in chases in California and other places, sometimes its much safer for all including uninvolved citizens if you let them get away and find them later. Sad to think this one junior crime really will seal the fate on the rest of his life but real its not smart to run from anyone carrying a gun and badge, just watching too many movies I guess...

My question is......no matter what the crime, when did it become acceptable for anyone to lay their hands on any officer of the law? Way too much of that happening in all crimes.

I read today that some idiot got into a fight with one UPD and ripped off his badge! The street punks have no respect for themselve's so why for anyone else. Hell I noticed the number of men arrested for beating up their girl friends has increased and in most of those cases it's the girl friends that buy the sneakers. The whole world is screwed up. If I was a cop and that happened to me I would find a way of shooting first then answering questions later. Lord, if I was ever arrested I would pass out first!!!

you know I think its the wrong thing to assuallt a PD period. Stupid to resist someone trained and armed. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen and sometimes the cops wrong like the drunk trooper that tried to break into the wrong house. Like I said, kids been watching too much tv, now hes gonna get a realty show he wasnt counting on...
