It is a good point that you make Dan about starting with local elections and developing a base before stepping into the national arena. Hell, presidents from the two MAJOR parties can't depend on the support of congress on any given day. haha.
I also agree that they need to refine their message and their stand on such vices as gambling and legalizing drugs.
I am afraid though that in Utica, a libertarian's chances were ruined when uticans found out what happened when Eddie Hanna ran on his own party ticket. They most likely would be afraid to step out with courage and vote away from the mainstream. haha. Afraid they might end up with a 60 foot wheelbarrow next to the big sprinkling can.

Having a Libertarian President will do no good without support in Congress. Oh, but it would sure be a lot of fun! Living in NY makes it a little easier to vote Libertarian, Clipper because the most socialist candidate will always win. So even if I voted for a mainstream conservative, I still won't be voting for a winner. I too, differ on several issues from the Libertarian Party, although drug legalization doesn't put me off too much. I say we should put buckets of pure heroin, meth and cocaine on street corners every day. The drug problem would be cleared up in months. So today, I am a small-L libertarian. I don't pay dues to the Libertarian party but I still like to read the Constitution every once in a while. I do miss the Libertarian conventions -- those are a real hoot.

Why can't a Republican develop a Libertarian ticket? It's the democrats with their socialist attitudes that hurt the American worker. They cry about the under-taxed rich, but 90% of them would then be facing larger taxes. Ralph Nader came the closest in 2000 to creating a three-party system. He needed 5% of the popular vote to put his party onto the national ballot from that point forward. I was rooting for him for that reason. But, as Clipper said, I wasn't about to "waste" my vote for a political statement when there were larger issues involved.

Yes Thelma, the Assessor's office will give you all the details. That's where I got all my info from and have done all that is expected of me for next years exemptions. ........................................................................................... Bobbbiez - Finally got around to calling the Assessor's Office only to find out I don't qualify!!!!! City and County taxes can be reduced 50% BUT the maximum amount of monies a taxpaper can have is lower than what my income is so I don't qualify. Figures - LOL!

I guess I can't go along with the legal drugs and "putting a bucket of heroin" on the street corner. I have a son recovering from heroin addiction, so I would have to selfishly decline that theory, seeing as how he got into a big enough mess paying for it. He would most likely be dead if it had been FREE. His addictioin not only could have put HIM in his grave, it damned near put ME in MINE, and that is a "no shitter". I had never felt so helpless in my whole life. I still pray and worry about him daily. I bet the conventions WERE a hoot. Mainstream people can be very boring, and listening to those considered to be "marching to a different drummer" can be, not only interesting, but also enlightening. I guess I love to listen, but don't have the balls to "get up and march", LOL.

NY's Libertarian Convention is in Manhattan sometime in July this year. It's total chaos. Anybody who pays the registration fee is a voting delegate.
The National Libertarian Convention is a little more formal but I attended one. C-SPAN has been covering it live, gavel-to-gavel for the most part, for the last 5 or 6 years so now I can stay home and watch it for free.
Swimmy, the big-L Libertarians believe that the only difference between the Republican and Democrat parties is which parts of the Bill of Rights they seek to abolish. With the GOP, it's mostly the 1st, 4th and 5th while the Dems are pretty much focused on the 2nd.
Folks like Ron Paul are rare--most Libertarians think of him as a traitor because he runs as a Republican.

I'm starting to feel like I'm kicking someone on the ground
Couldn't she drink JD? Or go all out free trade and follow the Crown Royal with a Dos XX and a Columbian cigar?

Unfortunately, Ron Paul has the right idea. You need to play by their rules until you're in a position to institute your own.
