I feel sad for the loss of jobs in these two great departments. I hope those who lost their jobs are able to find work in their same field. I will be praying for them.

That really is very nice of you, Alan. It is devastating for those laid off and especially for those who did buy homes in Utica to get the job. Your prayers will be needed for them to find new positions cause guess who will be paying for their unemployment benefits until then?

I know. It was upsetting to hear on the news this morning that moral is very low in the UPD. I imagine it is the same in the UFD. The odd part about the timing was that WKTV mentioned it, happened at the same time as the UFD and ambulcnce showed up next door. They are a special type of people who I hold in the highest regard. They truly have a vocation given to them from God.

Very sad to see them sacrifice these folks when its obvious that there were many other choices but cutting administration is rarely implemented before whacking the worker bees.
Hopefully another force will pick them up ASAP.

Hopefully another force will pick them up ASAP. ....and at our expense since we already paid for their school, training, equipment and etc. Never mind the fact they are needed on the streets of Utica.

There is an air of reactivity in the offices and hallways of our public works. While its reasonable to fix the giant holes in the current budget buckets, caution should be exercised before they end up throwing the Baby out with the Bathwater. They couldn't do the math over the last many years and now we are the recipients of the latest in quick fixes and duct tape repairs to the budget. The first thing they should do is fire all the budget managers and negotiators who's tenure spans the steep decline in income vs outcome, the outcome being not enough folks with income to pay for all the services that have and the retirements we couldnt afford to allow to build to such an outrageous unsustainable monster! After all, its not the current payroll thats killed the budget, its the folks that are retired and gone that threaten to kill future jobs.
Its not the retirees faults, they negotiated nothing, just followed their leadership and I am quite sure the beancounters could and did do the simple math, I remember the talks of bygone eras that reported this was on our horizon yet here we are, right where they said we would be if we kept spending like drunken politicians! Who ever approved all of these hikes and contracts did a disservice to the workers and the public and we will pay for that with the futures of those who havent yet lived a full life, the recruits!
As BZ pointed out, lost jobs plus the cost of training these folks is a double whammy who's outcome could cost lost lives and properties. I pray the rest of Utica can not just "ride this out" but truly overcome the excesses of our forefathers and Utica can rise up out of the ashes a lean and strong center for its citizens and surrounding communities to reconnect with.
