I thought it was time to post something about what the police have to put up with in their daily (nightly) grind. And these aren't even the dangerous ones.





Teacher accused of resisting arrest, drinking beer in front of cops

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) A teacher with Horry County Schools has been placed on leave after she was reportedly tased while refusing to listen to Horry County officers Friday night.

According to a police report obtained by WMBF News, officers were patrolling in the Dog Bluff area of Horry County around 10 p.m. when they saw a white Ford Explorer traveling south on Dog Bluff Road.

After a check of the license plate, it was discovered that the plates were suspended as well as expired. According to the report, the driver did not stop once a traffic stop was initiated until he got to a home along Dog Bluff Road.

As officers spoke with the driver about the suspension, a passenger in the car, Patricia Franks-Martin, 43, of Galivants Ferry reportedly got out of the car and wanted to know why officers ran the vehicle license, which she owned.

At that time, officers asked for Franks-Martin's driver's license so a citation could be issued for failure to surrender suspended vehicle license. She then allegedly became irate and refused to hand over her license.

According to the report, officers attempted to calm Franks-Martin down but she continued to yell and use profanity. "[Franks-Martin] even started drinking a beer while we were on scene, but put it down," the report stated.

Officers then said they saw two open containers of beer on the front passenger side floorboard of the car, and Franks-Martin allegedly told them to write her a ticket for open container.

When officers asked her to turn around, she told them they weren't going to arrest her and began walking away, the report said.

She was again told to turn around but then reportedly stated "you'll have to shoot me before you arrest me" and continued to walk away. At that time, officers said they felt it necessary to deploy a taser at her.

Franks-Martin was reportedly struck in the mid and lower back area and was taken into custody without further incident, apologizing.

Franks-Martin has been charged with failure to surrender suspended vehicle license, open container of beer in a vehicle and resisting arrest.

Teal Britton, spokeswoman for Horry County Schools, confirmed to WMBF News that Franks-Martin is a teacher at Conway Middle School. As of Monday, she was placed on administrative leave.

Two of the five comments supported her. I believe she has a good chance of being elected mayor of Conway.

I doubt she'd get a vote from the cop, who evidently was trying to shoot her in the ass with the taser!

Teachers ... and I can speak from a short 2 years of experience .... get used to being in charge and taking charge when things aren't going to their liking. Those who don't conquer the bad habit of transferring that attitude from classroom to the rest of the world eventually achieve a comeuppance. During my first six months in the classroom, I found myself literally ordering around younger store clerks in the shopping malls until one of them explained that he didn't need me to boss him around. He was right. I apologized and tried to keep that in mind in the future. I think I eventually got over myself, but some may argue with that.

I imagine it's the same with police.

Luckily, I have a wife to prevent me from thinking that the world listens to me.

I have a brother and a sister that are both teachers. They have a wonderful career and are both very dedicated and well qualified.

The only thing that has always pissed me off as years went by was that my dad, who had worked his ass off, and whose grammar and English had been adequate to earn the money to put their asses through college, was constantly stopped mid sentence while one or the other of them corrected his grammar.

Whenever I heard them correct my dad, I would simply think to myself that they needed to haul their heads out of their asses, their noses out of their English books, and show a little respect and gratitude for the man that worked to pay for their education. I am sure that the same grammar that got my dad through his engineering courses and 40+ years in the workplace, was adequate to carry him through retirement. The holier than thou"scolding teacher" tone in their voice would simply make me see red rats. The man had played a major role in teaching every one of us, and all of our children how to talk, read, write, to recognize numbers and to add and subtract before any of us even went to school. I simply don't think he deserved to be tutored in proper grammar in a demeaning tone at the age of 70+.

I did notice that in later years, they outgrew that constant urge to correct and teach when outside the classroom. I guess it came with maturity and experience. Probably some of that experience came from their misguided attempts to correct MY English, and the responses which contained some words that were not in their college English curriculum. Probably could have brought about an awakening a little earlier in their lives had I been equipped with a taser, hahaha.

You're right. That's a terrible way to treat anyone, especially one's parent. Respect should come before knowledge. And it's definitely a prerequisite for wisdom.

As frustrating as that must have been for you, clip, I can see where your siblings are coming from. Through my 31 years of life experience, I have a few grammar pet ledges. And regardless age, I find myself correcting people, especially when it come to written words. I try to be diplomatic about, but sometimes it is hard to do that.

If you came back in a time machine one hundred years from now, you might find your diction had gone out of style and the usage you're correcting had become the standard for cultured speech. Such is the speed at which language changes. Webster recorded what people were saying and naturally gave weight to how the educated spoke. He didn't invent the "rules," although he may have thought so. It's been pointed out by language experts that much of what we consider imperfect speech is actually more efficient. And as an aside, look at all the unnecessary Latin "tions" that have crept into wording that could be much simpler.

With that in mind, I find it hard to justify "correcting" anyone's speech. And I have no need to embarrass anyone.

I don't need a time machine, I have found that much of my usage is already out of style.
