This is a bit off from the original topic but given the almost universal desire to reduce printing costs, here is a link that provides several applications to do that. www.komando.com/downloads/category.aspx?id=10357Disclaimer: I have not yet tried any of these, but I have found Kim Komando to be a generally reliable source.

CB awhile ago I use to select just the print I wanted off a webpage (just the text minus the grafics and ads) This no longer happens when I select just the chosen and it prints everything it sees. Thanks for the url. (yes Kim rocks)

Well right now Clip I don't see the point since I only mostly print text only....and that works perfectly fine as does my scanner..(it has fax too but I never set that up) Once it breaks I guess I will be shopping.
Since the color cartridge use to work and because I had recently replaced it I was wondering why I was getting the results I did with color...maybe it dried up cause I don't use it....but then that would throw out the theory when I always hardly ever printed in color and it worked when I went to use it for color. I think I'll just stick to replacing the black for now. My Brain is wired to wonder why and find the reasons. (sometimes its not a good thing to drive oneself crazy when not really necessary) Its part of my Scorpio trait which I have no control over. ;D

Me, too. I'm a Scorpio, but never realized that was a trait common to all of us.

Im back with issues again and need some advice for possibly a new printer. I bought a HP photosmart since the beginning of this thread. (so had this for a year now or more)
I have been on this stupid computer now since Friday when I went to print a letter it spit out blank.
I've run tests and they all come back with flying colors in diagnostic tool. When I Printer Status report the black is missing so fails the report when it scans it . I checked the settings etc all good. Text prints very very very faintly in light blue (?) colors seem to be okay. Sat I replaced just the black ink but still did not work so yesterday went and bought the colors and replaced them but still no print job.
Now I am at the point that from what I read that the printhead maybe shot. The only thing I haven't done is uninstal and reinstall the printer. All updates are current. This is a HP Photosmart 5514
My last successful print job was an excel doc and Friday when I went to print it spit out a blank sheet of paper. Now my delema is what to do next.....(just invested in ink so do I stay with HP) or what would anyone suggest that is better similar to the one I have, (prints in color, scans faxes but never did)
Im guessing if I need repair then might as welll buy a new one. Really can't afford all this to begin with.
Thanks for any help in advance.....

I'd re-install the printer from scratch at this point. That is, go in and uninstall it from the Device Manager (if you're sure you have the software) and then turn off the pc. Unplug and replug the printer and bring up the PC and let it find the printer. I finally got tired of having to run a print head alignment every time the damned HP burped, the ridiculous shifting meanings of the buttons on my HP wireless printer and paying high prices for color and Black and White cartridges that never lasted very long. And the wireless feature was problematic, from the very strong RF Interference it emitted to holding the PC hostage with a 15 second hang every half hour while it went through some "HP Net Printer polling routine." So I bought a Brother compact laser black and white (no color) printer for $109 on Amazon. I seldom print color and even a color document most times renders readable and sensible in grey tones. B+W Toner Carts produce cheaper per-copy costs, too. I've had the printer for almost a year and I'm still on the first full size toner cart. (The toner cart that comes with the new machine doesn't last very long.) I hooked up my old HP Printer under my wife's kitchen nook desk so she can print to it (or my Brother in my office) from her Netbook. By the way, I noticed when I was looking on Amazon a few minutes ago for the latest Brother price, the price of a new HP wireless color printer is only $79, but the ink cartridge prices are the killer. Here's the link to the Brother on Amazon: www.amazon.com/Brother-HL-2270DW-Compact-Wireless-Networking/dp/B00450DVDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1383613559&sr=8-1&keywords=brother+hl+2270

Wireless printing & I have never been friends. I bought one for my wife but it always seems to take a time out at the most inconvenient times. For the majority of my needs I use a laser printer hardwired to the computer I'm using.
I did buy a cheap ($30-35 at Target) ink jet for use at the secretaries desk at lodge. I'll probably use more ink cleaning the printhead each time I use it than I will printing. I refuse to use it wirelessly. It takes much less time to plug in the cable than it does for the printer to warm up.
Unfortunately, a repair shop will charge you more to look at your printer than the cost of a new one.

Home networking of PC's or any devices is to me a strange arena. And I used to do school networks of hundreds of machines and shared servers. Yes, it was complicated, but when I issued a command it stayed done. Every time I have done something on a home network and gone back to look at it, something has changed. I suspect part of the problem is that unlike commercial networks, the "servers" in home networks are often shut off and on. And I suspect another problem is code imported from commercial applications that just doesn't fit or work well in home environments. (IBM once converted a factory control system [PICS] to a Hospital System where the patient took the place of a specially engineered part going through the manufacturing process. Finally, in the new system at least, humans were treated as just a part to spend money on.)
But back to Chris' problem, CB is right. Repair is not worth it and often not possible. I mentioned the $79 HP printer on Amazon and CB said he got a cheap printer for $35 at Walmart. It would be tough to beat that.

Well folks just installed my new printer. I bought an Epson XP-400. Staples let me return my ink and I applied the credit towards the new one so I really didn't loose any money from this debacle. (otherwise it would have been 60.00 for ink I did not need and still need to buy a new printer) The clerk in the store pointed it out to me cause it was on sale (69.00). i went home and did some research and it appears everyone had only good things to say about. it. For price you can't beat it. Has same features as my previous HP. Spits out the printed doc so quietly and faster than the HP. They don't even sound like they are printing and seem to fly out at the touch of the Print button. Set up was quick and painless. The instructions so simple and clear. Nice little compact printer for the deal. I hope this marriage is a long and sweet one.

Dave had no choice since all things pointed to bad printerhead. I bought insurance on this one to cover myself. (and probably the last day of the cov is when the little critter goes bad...murphy's law) The cost of printerhead and fixing probably was more then this new printer. I was a bit skeptical in buying something cheap because I always feel you get what you made for but once in awhile get lucky.

Reminds me I bought a fax machine years ago from Sharp which died ONE DAY after the warranty expired and they wouldn't give me anything. I was so annoyed by that when a month or so later I happened to be in Office Depot where I bought it and noticed the fellow behind the cash register had a manager pin on his shirt. So I told him about it and he said, "No problem, I'll give you a new one under our store guarantee policy." Wow, glad I complained. He said his store warranties were cheaper and better and were applied AFTER the manufacturer's warranty. So if you got 90 days from the manufacturer and bought a one year policy from OD, you would get 15 months.
