I often wonder why anyone even buys ink cartridges for a printer when the ink costs as much as a new printer. I was at walmart the other day and saw printers for anywhere from $29 to $49 dollars and up. My lexmark printer takes a black cartridge the is almost $40 for a full cartridge and over $20 for the half full one that you can buy at walmart and target.
Seems as though the landfills would be full of discarded printers and the ink refill sales would be zero. I quit using the printer I have because I don't print enough to make it worth the money. My cartidges were drying up before I got my money's worth out of them. I simply put whatever I want to print on a thumb drive and my buddy prints it for me, seeing as how my need to print is infrequent and usually only a single page.
At any rate, why would it not be advantageous to just buy a new printer Chris?

Yup, printers are now pretty cheap. And I notice the cost of carts have also come down. I'd go with a laser, but a color laser is still too expensive for my use. Between my wife and myself, we manage to use the printer fairly often.

Yeah, my son returned an email & said that if it were only Word messing up he would go with reinstalling Word. However with problems in multiple applications he's "got nuthin."

I would have gotten back to you sooner, just been a bit busy.
Despite modern technology, printers are relatively simple yet stupid creatures......they either work or they don't.
If you have reloaded everything, and cleaned everything, and poked/prodded/cursed everything.............chuck it.
I had a beautiful HP printer that was the cats ass and it decided to start screwing up a month ago. Well, out it went. Mainly because I have gone through everything you have and not found a suitable solution other than to get a new one. And it's not the first time either.
Inkjet printers seem to have a half life of about 5-6 years. If you can nurse them to work again, they seem to last about 6-8 months more and then just run amok after that.
If you get another just one word of warning. If you decide to go wireless with one be careful, most won't work "wirelessly" on networks that are encrypted.

I just replaced my driver and it did not work. I even tried changing font color in the envelope preferrences...nada. Then went back to Google and found someone else with the same problem. The solution there was for some reason some printers instead of using the black cartridge use all colors in the color cartridge to create black. It suggested to replace the color cartridge. Well the color cartridge is new.
I guess the only solution it appears is to buy a new printer except this one does work except for the envelope in word. (wonder why it doesn't affect labels in Word). One day when I get a job and have some money to throw away I'll get me a new printer. (well now I know all I ever wanted about my printer inside and out)
Printers are cheap...its the cartridges that are going to take you to the cleaners. Thats where they get their money back. Mine was free with my PC.

Printers are cheap...its the cartridges that are going to take you to the cleaners. Yep!!! But without the ink, you may just as well go buy a pencil!

Walgreens Drugs (don't know if they're in central NY or Rochester) was at one time refilling most printer cartridges for $10 each. A ridiculous price for an ounce of ink, but much better than $40 for a new one.

I imagine that there are Walgreen's Stores in Rochester. I know I have been to the one in Utica. The refills are $12.99 now for either color or black. Saw a promo for it here the other day.

we have a Walgreens on every corner (really) They just keep popping up all over. We also have a store (Metro Cartridges) that refills cartridges that are much cheaper than buying a new cartridge. Maybe I'll take my color cartridge there. I have a feeling it may be the solution to my printing.
BTW ...went to scan something this morning and the scan button didn't work...so this time I went to Dell and followed the instructions for uninstalling a printer and downloading a driver. Scanner now works but printing is still in red for the envelope. I am leaving well enough alone for now.

I tried the refill idea. With the lack of printing my cartridges dry up. They said that they tried to clean it, but were unsuccessful and could not fill it. If you use your printer often enough to keep it from drying up, you probably would not encounter that problem.
I chuckled when I read your post about the Walgreen's on every corner. We have a building race going on here the last few years. When you find a pharmacy, there is usually two of them across the street from each other. If CVS builds a store, Walgreen's buys the parcel across the road or down the street and builds, or the other way around if Walgreen's builds first. Where we happen to live, we have FOUR Walgreen's stores within about 5 or 6 miles, one Rite Aide and several CVS stores.

Clipper the first time I ever heard of a Walgreens was when I went to Arizona. It reminded me of a drugstore/Woolworth's combined and a gift shop to boot. Since back then LHC was just growing there were no stores to go to in the mall other than that and a Supermkt. It had a great photo center so I was able to develope a lot of my photos before I got home (before digital) I was excited to hear they were coming here until I saw the set up here...much different. I preferred my Daws/Riteaid and CVS over them and still do.
There is one in my neighborhood on one corner and a Riteaid across the street (which was ther first) I thought for sure one would close but both seem to be doing well. About four blocks down is the other one. They just keep them popping up all over the city.

Chris, If you think your problem might be the cartridge, I wouldn't get it refilled. the problem could be in the cart itself. One more time before you spend money .... DID YOU RUN A VIRUS SCAN?

No I didn't Dave. Well not since I unistalled and reinstalled the printer and the driver. I did though a few days before that and it rums a scan on its own each morning at 3a. Do any of those count.

Clipper speaking of Walgreens and how cheap printers are becoming. In todays paper the ad for Walgreens had an All in One HP printer for 34.00. Now that 's a deal (providing its not refurbushed or archaic. I'll have to get the details and look it up for reviews.
