I guess I'm a perfect example of one who believes the hype put out by industry, because I would have thought hologram projection was far past this stage by now.
As an aside, I remember in '77 being impressed by George Lucas' cinematic decision to portray the holograms in the script as sketchy and jumpy, as not perfected technology. Anyone could have simply grafted into the scene a perfect image of a tiny Obi Wan Kenobe dancing on a table top, but Lucas realized that would be boring and possibly confusing. Same was true, although more humorous, with Chewbacca fixing the hyperdrive on Han Solo's spaceship with a set of crescent wrenches.

Big difference in the two. Holograms are simple rendered two dimensional images that only appear to be true three dimensional.
What we are seeing now are actual real time true three dimensional images.

There have been a few attempts to do this for real but this looks like the first one that is not dependent on an external medium like smoke or fog to make it work. Its only using the stimulated reactions of the elements in the air to make it show up.
It will be interesting to see this develop into usable products, I dont like 3d TV, it hurts my eyes and brain, this could fix all of the issues of glasses and depth generation. My guess is that war-craft, surgery, Remote collaboration and video games are the biggest benefactors of this. In 10 years, I will be able to buy the entire projection system for $99.00, full 1080P and it will fit on a chip the size of my fingernail!
I love this stuff! Very cool!
