EATON, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Rome man is dead and a Rome woman is in critical condition following a motorcycle accident Wednesday in the Town of Eaton.
The accident occurred around 11:45 a.m. Wednesday on State Route 26 in the Town of Eaton, near the hamlet of Hatch Lake.
Madison County Undersheriff John Ball stated that a small group of motorcyclists were driving when a deer crossed into their path. One of the drivers - Todd A. DePasquale, 48, of Rome was hit on the side of his motorcycle by the deer, lost control of the cycle and was ejected. The Sheriff's Office states that he was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
He was transported to Hamilton Hospital by Eaton Ambulance where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. DePasquale was off-duty from his position as a Deputy Sheriff Correction Officer for the Oneida County Sheriff's Office.
A second motorcyclist - Rosemarie Moore, 56, also of Rome - was riding behind DePasquale at the time of the accident. The Sheriff's Office states that she also lost control of her cycle by attempting to avoid the accident taking place in front of her. She was transported to Upstate Medical Hospital in Syracuse via Georgetown Ambulance and is listed in critical condition. Officials say she was also wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
"Our deepest sympathy is extended to Mr. DePasquale's family and the men and women of the Oneida County Sheriff's Office," stated Madison County Sheriff Allen Riley.
The NYS Police, Eaton Fire Department, SEVAC Ambulance, WEVAC Ambulance, Madison Fire Department and Ambulance assisted on the scene.
State Route 26 was closed in both directions during the investigation and reconstruction by Sheriff's Deputies, but reopened shortly after 2:30 Wednesday afternoon.
May Deputy DePasquale rest in peace. My sympathy goes out to his family and friends as well as his fellow officers at the Oneida County Sheriff's Department.
