Court sides with Washington universityIf I remember my IP law correctly, most universities have their professors sign a licensing agreement at the onset of employment that assigns the professor's rights to any patentable or copyright-able research to the university. I seem to remember my copyright professor saying that a university owns the IP rights as a result of a professor's employment contract, but that the universities have not taken full advantage of these rights yet. Seems like this is the first instance and could be the start of a national trend.

I find it interesting that the Court decided without comment. I recall that every time I get blood taken for tests, I sign 6 or 7 pages of fine print. It wouldn't surprise me to find somewhere in there that it says the lab owns my blood.
