You will understand the difference when I've fully developed the process for canned merlot.

It is funny how a weaker signal won't come through my apartment walls. If I open the window and place the laptop on the sill with the screen open I can get a signal that is public to click onto. I guess I am going to have to pay to have Verizon. I am so damn cheap.

It is almost decision time Alan unless you want to be sitting in front of the window in mukluks and a parka with snow blowing in your face while you enjoy the fun and games here on the forum.
The external antenna thing didn't work out, or didn't you try it?

The external antenna thing didn't work out, or didn't you try it? To scared to try the damn thing. Afraid if I plug it into the computer and it doesn't work that I will not be able to use the wifi again. I've got dial up but it takes so long.

Lead paint in older houses is a major blocker of Radio Frequencies. Stone and brick dont help either but the paint can make a huge difference. Unfortunately, its there until it burns down or someone rips all the clapboards and inner walls down and replaces them.

Thanks, JG. I suspected stone and concrete was a problem because of the way my wifi acts in the basement, which has a center concrete wall and I've seen problems with that material at those frequencies before. Lead paint I hadn't thought of. In this old house, that could be part of the problem because I go through an interior wall, but it WAS an exterior wall at one time (an addition.) And that wall causes me problems.

lead paint is a very effective shield for RF, acts just like a Faraday cage.

Wow, Alan. I am glad that you have SOME access to the internet and we are glad that you choose to spend some of the time on line with US. For that we are grateful.
I can't imagine dealing with dial up. When I acquired my first computer from a friend, I used AOL Dial up and the free CD's that they sent out in the mail and sold at Walmart. THAT only lasted about a week. I could not stand it. I am not a patient person, LOL. I tried the cable service, and after a month, I upgraded to the "high speed" service. Since Ralph worked over my computer in August, it takes me about 45 seconds from hitting the "on" switch to reading the first article on the OD Homepage. I guess if I install more RAM, it will be even faster.
Do you go to the library or to a coffee shop with Wifi? I see people here going to Perkins and other places to use their laptops to do college homework and to access the internet. In summer I think I read that there is wifi available in one of the downtown park areas that is a little like the old Hanna Park.
Like I said earlier. Just glad that you DO manage to get online and join us. I enjoy your humor and other interesting inputs.

I go to the library once in a while. I can pick up a many a signal on my patio including a public signal so I use that. If I bring my laptop inside the enclosed patio ( three brick walls and metal wall of windows and screens) I loose the weak signal.
There are about 4 strong signals that I pick up in my apartment at my desk. But can't use them becaue they are not public. So the Wifi signals do pass through the walls and metal interior housing the double windows.
I use AOL dial up and it is ok for most things I do. Can't watch video's because it take's two hours to download a 2 minute clip--ha ha.Wegpages are adding more and more material that increases there loading time--all the animation's, etc. I guess I am very patient. There is no public wifi access downtown Utica. Under the administration of Julian there was to be but it was never finished. Utica Access show up as a wifi signal but nothing happens--I asked about that and this is what I was told.

I don't know about the Utica area, but here there are some of the McDonald's restaurants and others that offer wifi availability. Also most motels, and some of them are unsecured networks so if you can find a warm place with hot coffee like Denny's or McDonalds in N Utica, you might be able to latch onto one of the hotel's wifi signals. I know Tramontane offers a wifi capability, or they did when they first opened.

Here for wifi I have picked up at Brueggers, Starbucks, RGH, St. Anne's only places I actually brought my netbook). Seams no mater where I am someone is using wifi. We have a list of hot sports Alan. Do a Google and see if there is a list for Utica.
Can't wait to test out my new iTouch. Picked it up at the Apple store today (what a zoo) wound up with the new white one. They set up everything for you there and get you running. (happy B'Day to Me)
