Thelma,
Fortunately there are exceptions to the rule. You probably know this saying "God helps those who help themselves". Probably true in this case, just the same it is good to hear the "cycle" has been broken with this family. Every race has there "trash", but some races it is more obvious and prevalent.

You are so right, wcup. I've always said the way out of proverty is education and the willingness to work at a goal you've set for yourself. All it takes is hard work! She has been brought up with values, manners, and the goal of wanting to stand on her own two feet and never having to depend on anyone but herself.
You are also right that EVERY race has their "trash". IMO - these are the people that only live for today and don't worry about the future, and have one excuse after another to justify why the Government should support them!
Yes - the "cycle" has definitely been broken in this family. Also, this girl was telling me how her Mom hates the look of the baggy pants, and other "Hood" apparel and won't let her son out the door wearing those type of clothes!!!!!

My experience has been that just about all of the folks from "the hood" can speak perfectly normal English when required. Listen to them in court. I worked with them and a simple, "cut out the shit, you're not on the street" was usually all that was necessary to have them switch back to American English. But I wouldn't try that in their neighborhood.

Dave - I have not had the same experience as you have had with people from the "hood". The only time I've ever heard them speak was either outside of Proctor High School while waiting to pick up my Grandaughter, or when I've had to be in City Court for one reason or another and listen to how they talk and answer the Judge. And there have been a few times I hear the ones dressed in "hood" clothing when I have been out shopping in various stores and they are close enough for me to hear how they speak.
We had a girl employed at the Insurance Comapany I retired from that people refused to talk to her over the phone because they simply could not understand what she was saying.
