I have this receipe for Beef Curry. It calls for Cardimon(sp). I went to Walmart to see if that had that spice. They do and it is $11.87 for a small bottle. How do these people in India afford that. Anybody know a substitute for that spice because I never used it before. It also calls for saffron I looked it up and its like $1000. an ounce. I must be living in the wrong country.

Stop by the one of the two motels by the thruway exit in N Utica and ask them where they get that stuff and if it is that expensive. Tumeric is often substituted for saffron threads when the saffron is mostly for color in a rice dish. Most curry dishes are way to spicy for one to be able to taste any saffron that is infused anyhow.
I know that when I had my carpet cleaning business and called on hotels, both those places smelled like curry central, as did the motel in Barneveld.
I am not being a smart ass or racist. I am serious. I bet one of those families could tell you how to get what you need or a substitute for it. I am sure that those families don't spend that kind of money to buy saffron threads to make their every day curry dishes for a family's everyday menu.

I never thought of that. I also forgot that SUNY-IT starts up so the bus's to SUNY will have lots of kids from India and Pakistan. The majority live off campus.

I used to go to an Indian restaurant in the Bronx when I was driving charter buses back in the 70's. I love some kinds of curry but as I get older, indigestion and common sense keeps me away from some of the spicy stuff that i used to like. I used to go through a bottle of Texas Pete hot sauce in about two weeks. Now I seldom use cayenne pepper or hot sauce any more. I used to put it on everything but ice cream and my cheerios, lol. I ordered a curried chicken dish once that turned out to be so darned hot it almost singed my tail feathers. I never realized that middle eastern people were into hot foods. lol.

I just saw some in the bulk section of Wegmans. packaged in small plastic containers and the price was $2.87 for curry powder. Saffron is one of the most expensive spices you can buy. Cardamon I believe comes from the nutmeg family so maybe you can substitute. I usually use it but in baking. (cookies)
