This message was posted in the OD editorial awhile back. I thought with the elections on March 18, 2008 the message needed to be reprinted.
Changes needed in NYM
My 2007 New York Mills village taxes have increased 10.3 percent from 2006. During the last four years, the overall village tax rate has increased 18 percent and total taxes have increased 20 percent
Thirty percent, or approximately $600,000 of the $2.1 million village budget, is spent on police protection, while only $41,000 is budgeted for capital improvements to roads. Even taking into account the amount spent for normal street maintenance and snow removal, more tax dollars are spent patrolling the streets than in maintaining them.
Property taxes go up each year and there are no improvements to roads or infrastructure, nor does there seem to be a long-term plan to address what will be a very costly solution in the future. Other surrounding communities seem to do a far superior job.
New York Mills residents need to step up in the next election and make some changes, so that this village will again be the pride of its citizens.
Our surplus money has all been spent. Leaving us broke and relying more on grants then ever. The favoritism needs to stop and we need people that are going to run the village like a business and not just for future political gain.
PLEASE REMEMBER TO VOTE OR GET A ABSENTEE BALLOT. YOUR VOTE DOES MATTER AND IS NEEDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IF YOU NEED A RIDE TO THE POLLS PLEASE CALL 798-4079 OR 292-4923.

Sorry for hijacking your thread, todd. But don't forget to vote for the Village of Whitesboro Justice too. I don't know if I'm allowed to throw my endorsement, so I'll reserve that for later. But be sure to go out and vote.

100% agreed Swimmy. All these Elections are so very important and is a great constitutional right.

Just to start an argument: Constitutional right or not, all these local elections are worthless.

100% agreed with again. But where would we be with out them. To have nobody responsible would be irresponsible in its shelf.

Why are these elections not in November like God intended?

Because the NYM gods and the Village of W'boro gods decided to go against the grain.
Why are these elections worthless? If you fail to vote, you foreclose any right to bitch about the government because you crapped out on your one chance to make a difference! No changing my opinion on that!

what I heard was that if the new guy get elected, he wants to disband the NYM police dept.

That would leave NY Mills' police coverage to the Oneida County Sheriff and State Police? How horrible. How will they survive?

instead of disbanding the police, he should strive to merge NYM into New Hartford or Whitestown.

So go ahead and vote and then feel guiltless bitching. But it's still worthless. You're voting to pay people to implement local laws, the substance of which has already been aptly covered by federal and state legislation. New York State has the highest duplication of state and local services in the nation. Local politics is a joke, local legislation useless. If every local politician was wiped out by a species of Legionnaires Disease ... call is CouncilAires Disease.... you wouldn't notice they were gone. You would have thought people would have begun to wonder when some towns passed resolutions in regard to the war in Iraq. Imagine that...Stittville has a foreign policy!

Why are these elections not in November like God intended? In some areas with high concentrations of retirees, it has been observed that winter elections are helpful when folks are down south and can't vote down spending.

and the only way to change that is to get someone in there willing to make those changes.

Good point Dave. Do they do absentee ballots for local elections in these towns? Snowbirds should be allowed to vote also.

There would sure have to be a major savings if they had one police department covering NY Mills, Whitesboro, Yorkville and New Hartford.
Imagine the money that would be saved if they put substations for the Oneida County Sheriff's Deputies in each town, and gave the appropriate raise to the deputies. Admin costs alone would be a major savings, and the additional county costs would be nothing compared to the costs of running the individual departments.
Simply combine all those functions, hire some of the small department officers to be deputies, to provide the extra coverage, and we would be on our way to some sensible regionalization.
