this is plain sick no matter how u slice it Agreed. Plain sick and filed under the category, "Tales of a Redneck Life". Furthermore, a mother's gift to her child should be lessons on how to make the most out of life, to be the best person that you can be. This does not include lessons on how to sit on your dead a$$ except to bark out children left, right & center.

Agreed, but this goes on. How is it stopped. Better yet can it be stopped. I do not think so. For many this is life. Sad yes but life.

Smacks of fraud as well. Convoluted, but fraud none the less.

Agreed, but this goes on. How is it stopped. Better yet can it be stopped. I do not think so. For many this is life. Sad yes but life. It goes on because: 1. It has become socially acceptable to be a deadbeat. 2. Too much boo-hooing about "what will happen to the children". What can be done about it: My husband has thought for years that the best way to stop young girls from embarking into motherhood during their own childhood is to offer them an incentive. I can't remember how exactly he offered up the plan, but it was something to the effect....At age 16 give them the option of the birth control shot, if they keep on it, pay for 2 years worth of college upon their graduation from high school. Win win situation. Better educated young women and less child bearing children.

Or prosecute the mother for parental neglect and the daughter for the same and put the baby up for adoption.

How about this: say NO.
My daughter nagged me for an iPhone - I said NO.
I'm sorry, but the biggest problem facing society today - from the schools all the way on up - is the complete and utter failure of parents to actually PARENT. When did it become wrong to have kids suffer consequences, to occasionally lose, and to not always get what they want??
Why didn't they get the kid a hamster and see if she could take care of that first?
That lady might be nice, but she sure doesn't seem like a good parent.

You're right, Realist. I've met many parents who simply don't want to do the work of parenting. They won't say No and stick to it. They won't follow through with appropriate punishment when a child disobeys after being warned. A kid has all the time in the world to grind down Mom or Dad with whining and "kicking and screaming" until the parent gives up and lets the child have their way. I was no expert parent, but I did realize that at the appropriate times I had to threaten with punishment I intended to carry out and then do it and put up with the whining and not be worn down. My kids, I think, learned there were consequences. I did a lot of things I didn't want to do, like make them apologize to in some cases a**hole school administrators, because I did not want to side with the kids when they were wrong, no matter if their teachers or principals were jerks. Same with neighbors, sometimes. Bringing up a child is a lot of work and some people are just not up to it. I remember a mother when I taught school (for two years) once saying to me, "why can't you give my kids some discipline here in school?" I explained to her she had the roles reversed and that it was her job to discipline them before sending them to school. She didn't get it. She didn't want to. It was easier to complain than to do the hard work of parenting.

Dave - you are so right. I'm always amazed at the length a parent will go to excuse their child's bad behavior, and how much the burden of actually raising a kid has been willfully surrendered to the school system. (I say this as a parent - not a school board member).
I think as a society, we are just too willing to excuse bad behavior in general - and glorify stupidity.
