Has anyone tried using the Word Starter software on Windows 7? I had been using it on my netbook, reluctantly since I find the constant advertising down the right side of screen annoying. It keeps asking me if I wouldn't like to upgrade to the pay-for version. While I was away last week I discovered another annoyance with the program ... it won't work when your PC is offline! That's right, for a couple of days the wifi was unavailable where I was staying and Word Starter wouldn't work, evidently because it couldn't call home. I've got to find my old Word 05 or 07 CD and load it. I hope it works on Win 7. If not, I'll pay a guy down in the village $50 to wipe the hard drive and put on XP and all the software I like.

Dave I have Microsoft Works my netbook which is Win 7 Starter but I really don't use it. I did click it open once just checking out the programs. I just opened Word to see if I got any ads and no. Have you thought of maybe using Open Office.g my evil eye
( I am wearing my "evil eye" today so maybe I'm protected.)
My netbook is too small to do much on so I rarely if ever do more than just surf on it.

Chris, I do have a copy of Works around here somewhere and when I find it I'll probably install it on the netbook. Mine is an HP Mini and I find it comfortable to write on as well as post to forums and I've even done some graphics work on it. I have a separate "mini mouse" that I use, even bringing it along when traveling, though I most often then use the trac screen or whatever it's called. I measured the keyboard before I bought it and it's only 10 percent smaller than the standard, so my fingers don't seem to notice the ten percent.

Well then you are the better of us two. I can type with my eyes closed on my desk top but am always hunting and pecking for my letters on the netbook. Maybe I have too big hands/fingers for the mini. Oh, and BTW I believe it was you that made the suggestion of running the mouse on leg or body part...works great. Just trying to get the cursor to move via flat surface is futile. TYVM

Yup, on the top or side of the thigh. Will get you stares in the library, though!
Some of the new laser mouses don't need much surface irregularity to work. Mine does fine on a normal wood desktop. When the surface isn't working for me, I pull out a magazine or newspaper.
By the way, these so-called mini netbooks are not that much smaller than the early laptops with the nine or ten inch screens. I wrote my fly fishing book entirely on such a "laptop" in 1996.

Dave,
Office 2007 works fine on my wife's netbook with Windows. When we first got it, I set up the security stuff & let her take it for a test drive. Since I hadn't installed Office yet she started using the trial version of Office 2010 that came preinstalled. She came to me when it asked for a product key.
On a whim I gave it the key from our version of Office 2007. Without much fuss 2007 was up & running, no install disk was used which was good since it doesn't have a CD or DVD drive. Actually she was pleased since she likes Office 2007 better than 2010 anyway. I was happy as well since I normally upgrade our home stuff only when her work upgrades, makes my life much simpler.

CB, I don't think I have a copy of Word 2007. Actually, Works (which I think is Word 2000 or 2003) is good enough for me since I just type with it and use no sophisticated functions or special templates, etc. Actually, most of the time I use Jarte, a free word processor that runs on top of Wordpad, but with much more function. Jarte is quick and light and intuitive.

Yes, I think Works is finally biting the dust. Windows Starter looks to be mostly an upgrade path to regular Office. I tried the "limited" edition of Word that is available free at Hotmail. It has sufficient functionality for my needs, but I have the same problem with things that are only available when you are on-line. I'd be tempted to try the product key from any legitimate Office product in my possession. What's the worst that could happen, an error messge?
I don't use Jarte but it says it is for Windows 7 as well. I haven't installed a ton of stuff on my wife's little machine but everything I have tried has installed without fuss.

Which brings up Open Office. Lots of people use it, but I don't care for it. Someone once commented that using Word and Office is like trying to turn the Queen Mary around and I feel the same way about OO. In fact, I've had OO take more time than Word doing stuff and that's an unenviable record. And OO even lost whole paragraphs in a piece I was writing, but I won't swear it wasn't my fault. Plus, I've never trusted Oracle. Who knows what they'll do next. The first time I ran into the copy/paste problem on OO (sometimes won't paste from an external document and there are problems with how much of a spreadsheet can be copy/pasted) and researched it to find Oracle had been thinking about a fix for over 3 years I knew it was Bush League. And OO has been around since Sun bought it from the Germans! Remember StarOffice?
PS: Jarte works fine on Win7. BTW, Jarte also loads large manuscripts MUCH faster than Word or OO.

Speaking of typing....and I know alot of people here are on FB so here is my question. The past few days on Facebook I am experiencing problems typing. Not sure why and its the only place I have a problem. I will type and there is a delay in what appears having me go back to correct It as it does not appear right away or seconds later shows up twice. It is so annoying. Anyone else experience this on FB?

Are you posting from a smart phone Chris? I have noticed lately that people commenting on FB from a smart phone of one type or another results in the comments appearing twice.

I agree, Ralph.
What aversion does one have toward Open Office? I've been using Linux exclusively for five years with open office as my office suite software. I have noticed no problems. The only time I need windoz is for software that is tunnel visioned toward that lousy os. For The Record is the only software the courts use for digitally recording court proceedings. For whatever reason, I cannot get it to run under WINE or Crossweavers.

My second problem with OO (did I mention this elsewhere?) is a tendency on the part of Oracle to not fix known problems, such as the copy paste problem I mentioned. I learned something long ago regarding WP programs when I worked for a school district and we decided to move people from Word Perfect to Word (for support reasons.) And that is when I get used to the vagaries of a particular piece of software, a replacement always seems lacking.
