My wife heard on the news that this will include 2-per car in "high crime" areas.

Ok, thanks. For a second, I was worried that this item got left out of the budget.

Eight more officers make what, about 2 more per shift?

Yep, two on each shift and two off on any given day. I have to say though, it is a start. It is one of the first positive things I have seen from him, since taking office. What a horses ass this guy is. I thought julian was a goof, but this guy is really out there. I hope he settles in and gets to work before long. We are wasting daylight and nothing has been accomplished yet!!

Re: 2 per car
Is it curious to anyone else that the one issue that everybody in Utica and the surrounding area has been talking about for many months was left out of the OD's coverage of the story?
I don't recall hearing anything about an outcry for a new payroll system in city hall or demands for a new human resources department. But those are the top 2 bullets in the story?

I was not aware that the addition of 8 cops is what satisfied the 2 officers per patrol car. I saw the addition of 8 cops, but did not know that's why they were added. My guess was to replace 8 retiring officers. Chalk that up to another great reporting job from the disgrace.

The only "concern" I have about our new Mayor's Budget proposal is the 6% pay increase for the Council Members and our elected Officers (including the Mayor). IMO, this is way too much and exceeds the rate of inflation. The Council Members only earn their salaries on a part time basis and the Mayor and his appointed "buddies" have NOT done a darn thing yet to prove to us that they even deserve any raise in their salaries.
As far as the increase in taxes to increase our Police Protection and patrols in our City, I'm in full support of this - no matter how much our taxes will increase. We need to stop these drug dealers and their criminal ways of overtaking our City.

If I recall correctly, the raise is mandatory in the Second Class Cities Law or some such similar nonsense that is required every so many years.
They get it whether they want it or not.

If this is true, then why does the Town of Marcy always able to lower their taxes each year? As I stated before, the Mayor and other "administrators" do NOT warrant a 6% increase in salary which is almost twice the amount of the inflation rate. Take just this 6% increase out of the Budget, and you will see that 7.25% REQUESTED tax hike drop.

Marcy is a good and bad example... they do not have thier own police department but they do have a dpw that goes above and beyond, they also have more residents each year.
Utica on the other hand has a large DPW and Police department, that along with a shirinking population would explain why the taxes in utica go up while marcy goes down..
i do not believe inflation to be at only 3%.... go buy a lb of anything out of the deli, its more like 20% over last year.

No, the Mayor and his appointments and other administrators don't need a raise. I didn't look that close to see who gets it in all of the mess.
The Common Council gets one every so many years whether they want it or not and it can't be "taken out" of the budget, it's legislated for, much like the $2M for paving that is there.

................ ...................................... i do not believe inflation to be at only 3%.... go buy a lb of anything out of the deli, its more like 20% over last year. People receiving Social Security benefits and entitled to annual inflationary increases, received LESS than 3% for the 2007 year. This is based on the ANNUAL INFLATIONARY increase for the entire USA during 2007 - argue witht the Federal Government; not me.
