The last plan I heard about was to leave it in place and work around it. The small road and parking area between the statue and the building is supposed to be created into a park of sorts. Can't say I'm still keen on a roundabout in the middle of Genesee St. People can't drive in a straight line as it is around here. Think about the DPW trying to plow it.

I like it. That's aside from the cost, who's paying for it and whether it will help traffic or not.

There has been some other work going on across Plant street and State. Looks like they might have been locating pipe by the narrow sections of pavement that's been paved over. As far as the roundabout work, no, they just selected Barrett to do the work.

Just seems to me that there are better places to spend money right now. Do people think that because the money comes from the federal sector that it is FREE? Whoever's money it is, it is not free and many projects would benefit the city much more than a cosmetic change and smoother traffic flow through and area that is hardly a gridlock even during the busiest of times. I have always thought that possibly cutting off Park Ave from Genessee and making that traffic follow Oneida to Hobart in order to access Genessee St. would solve any congestion or confusion at the square. God forbid anyone in busy downtown Utica should have to wait for a second cycle of the traffic light.

I think they are wasting lots of good money on a tiny part off the City. Rotting Sewer and Lead Water lines, potholes and 5th gen paving patchwork abound everywhere in the city and tons of decimated houses need removal.
IDK who is going to benefit other than Barrett .

I do believe that there is some sewer work being performed with this project.

I imagine there WILL be some sewer work done with this project Realist, but I don't see where it will have any effect on the overall sewer problems in the city, as it is right in the middle of the city, and will not be far reaching enough to help alleviate any of the problems, other than to possibly replace and relocate a few hundred feet of old pipe.
Housing, infrastructure improvements and efforts to recruit business are much more important to the area's economy and wellbeing than building a traffic roundabout and another park.
I am more in favor of the idea that I read about a short time ago, of AFFORDABLE loft apartments, aimed at student tenants from the business school, and at middle income folks, rather than simply building a bunch of high rent lofts for the wealthy and artsie folks that may never materialize to fill them. For every family or person you are able to place in new, AFFORDABLE housing, another dilapidated firetrap slum can be torn down somewhere else in the city.
Blacktop for streets, homes for those in need of homes, and improved climate for business, to draw them to the city. the whole city can't be parkland and flower beds. Let's face it. Utica is NOT Disney Land. lol

Well the sewers will need to be relocated and replumbed for this kind of remodel, no doubt. But for the overall sewer issue in Utica, its not going to address any of it.

I believe in separates the sanitary and storm lines under the roundabout - though they are rejoined further down. It certainly doesn't address the 30ish millions that will need to spend to correct the whole system, but it does do a small part.
