Town plans Consumer Square evaluationIt's about time the board did something intelligent in correcting the chaos at Consumer Square. I wonder how they gathered the brain power to figure it out.

Yes it is about time. I HATE that Wal Mart parking lot with only being able to drive up one lane and down the next. If I have to go to WalMart (which I hate doing also), I go to North Utica. Although that place with it's one main exit is just as annoying!!
I always thought whoever designed that whole Consumer Square area was clueless. The new Lowes/Twin Orchards parking lot design is also horrible. Anyone been in there with a full size pickup? You can't make the corners very easy. They must not have been expecting too many pickups at a home improvement store!

Apparently, the underestimated traffic volume when they decided to deviate from the pre-construction study and the original plans.
Perhaps the Lowes's developer did the same thing.

From the OD: "Since the shopping center that offers Wal-Mart, T.J. Maxx and Barnes & Noble opened in 2002, the volume of traffic has exceeded planners’ expectations."
From the layout of that parking lot with all the medians and traffic islands that block and impede traffic flow, can I assume they were only expecting 50 cars a day?
I never use the main drive at the traffic light to enter or leave the square. It is in a constant state of traffic chaos. The one down at Panera's offers a much easier and safer alternative. The new study will probably recommend eliminating it and constructing more barriers and impediments. Where did the developer's traffic engineers get their degrees? I have to assume it was either the Berkley School of Music or the Culinary Institute.
I agree with countrygal's observations about full-size vehicles at the Orchard. The engineer who laid out the parking-line painting must weigh 97-pounds and drive a Prius.

"This led to several lane misalignments."
Oh, is that what they call erecting curbs and barriers in random directions? Lane misalignments? Schwenzfeier must have studied political spin at the feet of James Carville and Paul Begala.

The only time I shop at Consumer Square is early in the day when most people are working (I'm retired). There is no Sale big enough to get me to shop there on the weekends!

It's too bad they couldn't make a way to be able to get onto 840 over by Wal Mart. It might help a little bit.

the roadway by Gander Mountain with the stop light on middle settlement road. if you go straight at the light you're onto 840 heading toward rt. 12 and rt. 8.

Ah yes, OK. I thought it was strange that they only made one way out of Consumer Square. And you're not supposed to turn left out of the one by Panera bread, but I've been guilty myself and done it just to get the heck out of there.

Swimmy,
Was that you I met going the wrong way when I was using my secret entrance?
I thought traffic flow was much improved Dec 2007 compared to Dec 2006.
Of course it may have helped that I did my Christmas shopping on a Sunday morning when a major snow storm was predicted. Sometimes being a contrarian helps.
