Yorkville firefighters early this morning battled a blaze that swept through a former gas station in the village.
The longtime vacant building at the corner of Champlin Avenue and Whitesboro Street was engulfed in flames when firefighters and area police agencies arrived shortly after 3:15 a.m.
Fire crews concentrated on protecting a nearby structure from catching fire as they extinguished the blaze. Meanwhile, Whitesboro firefighters were placed on standby if needed.
The fire was reported under control at 4:04 a.m.
The building is located just west of the Yorkville-Utica border near Oriskany Boulevard.

No, not Guy's place. It's where my ex use to have his used car business. Was a former gas station and should have been torn down years ago. Horrible site.

Is that near Guy V's limo place? It used to be Baird Oil Gas Station for years on the corner of Champlin and Whitesboro Sts. near Oriskany Blvd near where the okd bridge across the Blvd was at the end of Whitesboro St. and across from Dunlap. They have had trouble with no one wanting to pay for the clean-up of hazardous materials. Also old family survivors involved so that things were at a stand still.

You're right Jon. The old tanks are still in the ground and it would be a great expense for someone to buy it and clean all up. Too bad cause that is a prime location and quite a large lot.

dig a hole, remove the tanks, fill the hole back in. whatever was in there is so diluted by now what MORE harm can it do? Just don't plant any tomatos there for a few years !!!

Seems as though it took the Utica way, burn it down rather than waiting for it to be torn down. Funny how a structure that has been vacant for at least a decade suddenly catches fire. also ironic how it is on an environmental hazard list.

I go by that place every once in a while and noticed that someone was starting to remove the wood. I thought it was being torn down! Was a bad eyesore

But no one, including the town of Yorkville wants to claim ownership because of the cost cleaning it up. That's got to tell you something about what it will cost. I would say that is a prime location for any business and yet no one is jumping at it.

Funny how some municipalities with seize certain properties for back taxes while not claiming others like this one for the same. Perhaps I should let a fuel oil tank leak on my property for a few years and stop paying my taxes... Just sayin'...
