I had a good fish fry last fall at Fat Cats in Herkimer. It's in an old warehouse building on Mohawk St. The decor is industrial cafeteria but the food was good.
At the reception for the wedding we attended last weekend included walleye fillets on the buffet line (also asparagus with hollandaise sause). That was a bit far to travel however even for good fish.

We had a great fish fry (actually a seafood platter) in Shallotte NC a year or two ago. Of course we are not too hard to satisfy in late years. Here in NE Tennessee a fish fry is a platter of dry and boney catfish and a cup of jarred tartar sauce.
Every trip to NY State includes at least one trip to the Knight Spot drive-in and restaurant in Frankfort. Huge portions, reasonable priced, and the sides are delicious home made mac and potato salads and slaw. The fresh haddock filet always hangs off the ends of the platter.
You mentioned the Franklin in Rome. When I worked at Griffiss, we used to send out for fish from Stan's Seafood on W. Dominick Street on Fridays. THAT was as fresh as one could get. Melt in your mouth good.

Gee Clarence. Walley filets? Boy do I miss that from my Minnesota days. We always carried a skillet, a quarter pound stick of margarine, and onion and a few potatoes with us when we fished so we could build a fire, filet a few walleyes and cook a little shore lunch. Nothing compares to fresh walleye filets, cooked in butter over an open fire.
