Actually, I had the same "funky" text displays when I accidently tried Safari 2-3 years ago (I wasn't careful about which boxes were checked during an iTunes update). Maybe it's something in my screen driver but that plus some other function which wasn't intuitively available made me dump it.

When I began using FF 4 the add-ons didn't work, were not updated. I went back to 3.6, but am back now on FF4 since the add ons have been updated. Chrome is faster. I do not like Chrome's Speed Dial and a couple of other things. I don't notice any line weight irregularities. If you want nice crisp "print" of fonts, try Safari for Windows. One of the problems with all of these browsers I've noticed in the last year is that they are all beginning to look the same, mostly in the area of the user (me) having to hunt for functions which are no longer displayed as obviously as before. I assume this is because function has been added to such an extent that it can't all be displayed on the main panel. I'm not sure what you're getting at, Dave. I have found firefox to be the same with its preferences, etc. And if all else does fail, you can always type about:config into the address bar and address all kinds of settings.

Times like this I wish I lived up there in NY again Ralph. The problems I have might be a simple case of needing a spring cleaning of the hard drive again, like you did for me a few years ago when I brought it with me on a trip home.

More about you having to hunt for functions that are no longer displayed as obviously as before.

Yeah, it took me the longest time to get the menu item line to show up. The latest versions of Browsers seem to "ship" with it not showing as a default, which I find interesting. And annoying. Maybe I'm getting old. I think it was with IE that it took me the longest to navigate around the functions.

Menu item line? I only have four add-ons I use: Tab Mix Plus, Personal Menu, Speed Dial, and Thunderbird BIFF. And I rarely have any troubles using the newer versions, unless I upgrade too soon. But I find that by the time the browser itself decides it's time to update, all my add-ons are already updated too.

Firefox calls it the menu tool bar. You know, File, Edit, View, History, bookmarks, etc. The basic of basics that I was surprised I had to hunt for on newer versions of various browsers.

Oh, gotcha. I guess I don't remember. I use the personal menu item to get rid of it, but still have quick access to it.

I tend to wait on things like major browser upgrades until they've been out for a bit, let other people discover the problems. I try to keep up with the security upgrades between the major version changes.
Firefox broke for me during an upgrade to 3.something. Similar to the problem Dave had except with the keyboard. Subsequent upgrades didn't help and trips to various help boards were no help.
For Firefox 4 I decided to do a clean install, didn't import anything even bookmarks. It was time to clean up my bookmark stack anyway. It worked great, very fast. I had a couple stability issues with some flash videos but that seemed to clear up when a flash update came out a couple days later.
Last weekend I saw an alert about a FF update. I didn't pay close enough attention and didn't realize I had installed FF 5 until I got a message about a couple extensions being broken. I did a little reading and learned that Mozilla has now committed to a new version every couple months and won't support older versions with security updates. I still like it but I don't think I like the new policy.
By the way, I find no difference between FF 4 & FF 5 in either look or performance. I don't understand why it is a new version.

Somewhere in my dark, deep software past, versioning (as we called it) is ringing a few bells. Did it have to do with legal issues? But since FF is free, that would seem unlikely. And I just read that FF is making a lot of changes to the code, because they're falling behind. See: answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110524082558AAiUGBP

The problem for me is FF is the only browser other than IE I've ever been able to get my wife to use. If it breaks or even changes every few weeks it won't be acceptable. She just wants it to work whenever she clicks on the icon.

Kevin Melnick (famous hacker) mentioned in his interview the other night that Google Chrome was safer than IE. Didn't mention FF.

Which is "better" or safer seems to depend on which expert is asked and which browser was most recently updated.
