The 3-speed electric hand-mixer I've had since 1975 & cost a whole $10 finally took a crap & died. Very sad... The next thing will probably be my Crock-Pot that I've had since '80, or my microwave that was made in '87 (according to the label-thingie inside). Man, they just don't make things like they used to!

In this day and age, we live in a disposable society. I'd rather have items that were quality built that lasted a long time. But then, they wouldn't be able to sell us new ones as often.

Kathy has a Sunbeam mixer that is over 25 years old. It sits on a shelf in the pantry, resting in it's well earned retirement since I bought her a Kitchen Aid mixer a few years ago. I expect the Kitchen Aid to last 25 years of so also. It will outlast us with a little bit of luck. We have a Rival Crock Pot that is about 10 years old. I suspect that the $30 price will mean planned obsolescence will take that out soon, and will require us to replace it. I guess it depends on how often you use and item and how important it is in your daily lifestyle. Kathy bakes constantly, so to pay $300 for a mixer is not out of line, but if you simply whip potatoes or make a cake once every couple of weeks, the throw away hand mixer simply makes much more sense. We still have a $10 hand mixer for potatoes.
The sad thing is that throw away used to mean we were keeping AMERICAN'S WORKING to manufacture replacements. NOW we are simply filling the pockets of foreign companies.

My Lord, we must be related. I refuse to buy anything until whatever preceded it has completely died. Not because I'm cheap, but because I hate the thought of landfills being piled with crap just so we can have the latest gadget. I keep a car until the wheels fall off. I love clothes from thrift stores, which is where all my high-priced stuff bought retail winds up anyway & others buy it for a fraction of what I paid to begin with. I refuse to succumb!!

lol! I have y'all beat. I still have and use the hand-mixer I bought in 1961 when I first got married at the Grant store that use to be in the N.Utica shopping plaza. My kids have bought me new ones over and over again and I took them all back to the store. I'd be like you, Stoney, if it ever broke.......very, very sad.

Don't buy a cheapie at Walmart unless you only want one use out of it. I still like a wire whip it works the best for what I need it for. I can't bake cake or cookies or anything like that it never turns out right. So I get what I want from the Florentine or Caruso's.

Yeah...like WHAT'S this for? I still get a chuckle from remembering a line from my ex....She's got a Touch and Sew but she doesn't touch it so it doesn't sew ;D I still have a brand new pressure cooker from 1967.....I've always been afraid to use it. I still have a crockpot from around then. Think I bought it at that store on South ST or maybe it was on Mohawk.....sort of like the Present Company. Still works and used it last year to make corned beef and cabbage. (one of the best recipes around)

That store on South St or the one on Mohawk would have been Tehans Wholesale. They ended up in a brand new building on Commercial Drive in New Hartford near Sangertown Mall and then closed up and went a way. Stoney, watts are for wimps. Buy a hand mixer big and bad assed enough to be measured in HORSEPOWER, haha. Get one that can mix concrete and mortar when you aren't making instant pudding or a cake. ;D
