...here is a bench from Benches on Parade. There are 117 of them and so far I have found about 30 (they are all around Rochester, Victor and Canandaigua and not always easy to find because some are inside) This one is in front of the Golisano Childrens Hospital at Strong Memorial. They are an art project for non profit agenies to raise funds. "A Sparkling Day of Play"

They remind me of the latest craze down here with whimsical animal statues mounted near the edge of the sidewalks and other places on the streets of Catskill, Hudson and Saugerties. These are joint projects by local artists and town and village merchant associations. Here's one of the many cats mounted in Catskill: Since Catskill and Hudson are right across the river from each other, Hudson chose dogs. I was sort of hoping they would choose their city mascot which is a whale. Believe it or not, Hudson was a whaling town with ships coming way up up the Hudson (120 miles from New York on the ocean) in the 1800's to deliver whale carcasses for rendering. But they chose dogs and here is one of them. Because Saugerties has in recent years become a horse town through HITS (a large international Horse Show organization) horses grace our downtown.

I like the cat. Haven't been to that area in ages. (ex in-law country) I like the cat the best. We also have lighthouses (by the lake) and horses (stallions no carousel ones) Once in a while I see an eagle or an elephant still.

I now have shot about half and another 67 more to go. I am getting to rediscover the city. Some not so easy to find as I found out some are inside the building and they only give you an address for the bench. One brought me to Monore Community Hospital only to find a fanatastic example of Art Deco and was told they recently refurbished the buildings.

Well my sister called me to gloat that she just shot all the benches. (I have about 30 more to go) and who approved her being off this week.
PBS just had a program about the benches and how they were painted, artists involved etc. (and interaction of the city and benches) I got two more today. The show is quite interesting. They have a book, DVD etc...for patronizing PBS. One level they will be giving away a miniature bench with a book and DVD. (I want a mini bench)
Phillip Burke (internationally known artist )the guy who painted Chuck Mangione bench lives in Buffalo so he qualified as a NY artist. He painted his live in front of an audience. That must have been cool to watch. He paints for the New Yorker and Rolling Stone. [youtube]
