Good articles. Although the current regime in Iran is for all intents and purposes odious, one cannot expect them to sit in the shadow of Israel's nuclear weapons. That is the hoped for expectation of the US and Europe and it is completely unrealistic. Even the more modern, less crazy citizenry of Iran ... if they ever get into power ... would not allow that to happen. Plus, nuclear power is the energy of the future and the argument that Iran doesn't need it because they have so much oil doesn't wash. The sale of oil is Iran's economic engine and the product's worth is determined by their customers' demand for it, something that can change in the future. Mother Theresa would probably decide on nuclear arms as a deterrent and nuclear power for growth if she were installed as Iran's next Ayatollah. The problem with the current set of felons is that we don't know if the Israelis and the Iranians are crazier than the Americans and Russians were during the Cold War.
The United States must walk an independent and narrow path in regards to Iran. We need a more creative solution than just threats. And I imagine the so called sanctions will likely be ineffective. Israel is a friend to the United States, but they are also in our underwear. Half of their leadership went to college in New York City and half of their friends are now in Washington ... in Congress. (I'm exaggerating, but maybe not by much.) As long as the Israelis remain heavy donors to American politicians, our actions in the middle east will be muddled.

For a country that is under constant threat from their neighbors with an Iranian president who has announced on several occasions that he wants to eradicate Israel from the face of the earth, I can't say as though I blame the Israelis' position. If Iran were to acquire nuclear arms, they would, without hesitation use them against Israel. Just as North Korea is now testing their missiles with a range capable of hitting Hawaii.
