Yesterday at 5:30 I had my 5 month old grandson on my hip, the phone cradled to my ear with my shoulder, 2 year old grandson tugging on my leg asking for a snack, my granddaughter calling an unintelligible question from the family room while I stirred the stew on the stove. Then the call waiting tried to put through another call. My impression of air traffic control is that it is like that on a good day.

Sounds like home. ;D Yeah, and we all manage to handle the confusion. Even though at times now with my grandkids I wonder how the hell I did it raising my five kids.

CB, talk about kids. Got to share this story with you only cause I'm busting to tell someone. This weekend I'm giving my daughter a baby shower at Club Monarch and also have my 5yr old grandson, Marco, for the whole weekend. His brother has a hockey playoff in Vermont over the weekend. His parents want to concentrated on Marco's older brother without chasing little Marco around so grandma has him. I told him he can come to the shower with me and that he'll have fun. Well, the little bugger goes home and tells his dad if he can't go to Vermont with them, he would throw up at the dumb old shower. ;D This weekend should be very interesting.

I think the kid in the control tower incident speaks volumes of the lack of professionalism apparent in one of the world's busiest airports. Not to mention the stupidity. Any guy who would bring his kid into what should be a triple-safe area, put him on the air, where literally thousands of pilots, regulators, passengers and others were listening, would have to be either stoned or extremely dumb. More than the specific actions of the child, THAT is the scary part.

I'm hearing now that it was three 24-26 ft waves that hit the cruise ship.

Much different indeed Bobbbiez. A control tower is a place that is usually so secure that nobody but the controllers is even allowed to enter. It is a place that requires constant attention to what a controller is doing, and there is no room for visitors to interfere. Especially at a place as busy as Kennedy. an air traffic controller has to have a grip on all of the aircraft that are on his screen and has to be "in the zone" at all times, with no outside distractions to make him lose track of even ONE of those aircraft for even ONE second. With three major airports in that immediate area, and hundreds of aircraft in that corridor at any given time, from Boston to Philadelphia or DC, there is no room for letting a kid play controller on daddy's lap. LIVES depend on that fact. The two involved definitely deserve to be fired or disciplined. It was very poor judgment.

Yes Clipper, I do think it was poor judgment on the father's part and I'm sure it was done with no intent to injure anyone, but I still think they're making a mountain out of a mole hill. The father and the supervisor are being reprimanded and that should be enough. Why crucify the father more.

I am glad that you think that way Bobbbiez, and I am glad that it is not up to you to set the rules. You would probably have a "bring your kid to work day" and let ALL the controllers kids play with the microphones and radar screens. The rules laid down by the FAA are very strict and stringent. The controller AND his boss both knew better and are much more aware of the danger than you are. I have been in a control tower while a firefighter at Griffiss. Every control tower of any size, with any significant amount of air traffic, is nothing more than organized chaos. Absolute concentration and attention is a necessity, with NO exception.

Hey, I said the father made a bad judgment and he is being punished for that. No need to continue to hang him by his toes. So glad none of us ever made a bad judgment in our lives that could have ended up in a serious situation.

Yup, no doubt about it. Bobbbiez has the makings of a terrorist! Clip, I don't think we should hang her by her toes. She might get nasty!

No Dave. We should hang her by her thumbs. She has enough trouble with her foot. Wouldn't want to exacerbate that problem by hanging her by the toes.
All I was saying Sunshine is that you obviously have no idea of the sanctity and security that usually surrounds the actual control tower space, and the fact that the kid did not even belong IN the tower, much less on the microphone directing a taxiing pilot on departure. A reprimand is a real break for the father and supervisor. I am surprised that they weren't fired.

Bobbbiez, it sounds like you're talking about Rogue Waves. They are very dangerous and have been known to sink even the mightiest of ships. Their causes are still being researched.
