Judge Balio passes awaySorry to share the sadness on Clipper's birthday. But I met this man when he had retired from the Appellate bench while I clerked for then-Judge Julian. He was a great man. He loved his work and loved helping people. His absences from the judiciary will be greatly missed.

I stood before him years ago to establish guidelines for child support for my oldest son when his mom and I separated. He was tough, but a fair man, and had only the children's interests in mind. I met him many years later at a charity fund raiser, and shook his hand. He was revered and honest judge. Funny how I looked at him through different eyes then, than I did when I had to take part time jobs to meet his support requirements, haha.

I just remember seeing how much he cared about his cases, as a judge; I never knew him as a practicing attorney.

Well, I imagine that he was a skilled jurist, or he would most likely have not been elected to the family court and certainly not selected to serve on the appellate court.

Just to clarify, appellate division and court of appeals positions are by gubernatorial appointment only (with state senate approval).

Selected or appointed. I knew it was not an elected thing and that the governor put them on the bench. Thanks for correcting the terminology Swimmer. The governor appoints ALL state level court judges doesn't he?

I am sorry, clipper. My eyes did not see the word "selected" just "elected" both times. With the exception of support magistrates (and I don't know who handles their appointments), most of your trial judges are elected to 14-year terms.

My sympathy goes out to Judge Balio's family and friends. He served his community well with fairness and integrity. RIP Judge Balio. You truly deserve it.
