...have any of you looked at that new ereader, nook?
I got one a few weeks ago. I'm wondering what others think of the gadget.

Another version of Kindle? Won't smell like ink. Yankee, do you like it? Did it take time to get used to it? Are you saving $ per book? What's your overall impression?

I haven't been up to look at one yet, but the Nook certainly seems to be a step above the rest so far.
Unless you have a small fortune to spend......if so you need to check out the QUE.

Wow. I posted this a YEAR ago? Guess I'm behind on a few things....
Anyhow. Dave, if you're still around and still interested, I LOVE my nook! Aside from a couple of "new gadget glitches", it was easy to get used to. Software updates have made it even better, faster and easier to manage my growing library.
The cost of books is a little disappointing. Right now, new releases and best sellers are no bargain. On the other hand, B&N regularly offer a lot of books at big discounts, even free. So, I suppose it all evens out. I'm hoping that eventually the prices will come down as more competition enters the market.
And the thing is so handy! I spend a fair amount of time in various VA waiting rooms, and with the nook I'm never without something good to read.
Now, I'm looking at the new COLOR nook. It's impressive. Don't think I'll be buying one any time soon, though. My original model is doing just fine.

I was at the library the other day and this older gentelman was trying to get some help from the librarian with his kindle. She knew nothing about downloading any books which he was trying to do. She told him the PC's do not allow books to be downloaded to a kindle directly. I understand that you can but must first download a program on your own PC from the libarary and then can borrow a book that way. Any input on this ?

Yankee, they sound very interesting. Thanks for the report. Chris, I don't know for sure, but I thought Kindle uses the same wifi arrangement as the IPAD and similar products.

Dave it sounde like the librarian was telling the guy he could not come into the library an hook up his kindle with the PC to download a book. What technology is needed to do that I am not sure of as I don't have one myself to know the requirements. I only know a little bit from reading stuff such as this thread.

That's weird, Chris. I read in the paper recently where Dunham Public Library is offering classes on how to download books to Kindle/Nook.

maybe on how to download from their computers at home. I'll have to check with the local main library downtown. (they know everything) I have downloaded stuff to my computer to put on my ipod from the library...I was assuming it is the same principle. But only get to borrow it then it disappears. Now you guys got me curious.

a friend is thinking of getting one for her son as a graduation gift and saw one on HSN today for 299.00 an E Nook with color. Sounds like a good deal. She called me up to ask what I knew about them and all I could tell her is what I learned from you guys. Any updates.

Maybe the problem at the library is if you order any kind of merchandise on-line and pay by credit card or Paypal the library might incur some sort of responsibility. Imagine you're the director of the library and a mother comes in and says you're responsible because her son ordered 22 porn films on the library's computer and used her credit card. That issue was just beginning to raise its head when I worked for a local school district. We had computers in a "Computer Center" for student use at the high school. We began to ask ourselves how we'd respond to such an irate parent. We got real serious about liability and due diligence when the FBI took away 3 computers for forensic investigation (luckily over the summer) because of a case where a student conversed on line from one of our schools to a perp who eventually kidnapped her and took her out of state. We had a teacher in an elementary school in the district who was the lone holdout for accepting 3 or 4 computers in the back of her classroom for student use because she said she wouldn't accept any responsibility for what the students did on them and worried about them being stalked, ordering merchandise, etc.
