Has anybody cooked with Panko Japanese-style breadcrumbs? These are great! Coated chicken tastes fried though it's only baked, which is healthier.

We use them all the time. They are great for "oven frying" as well as pan frying things. Kathy often uses them for baked chicken breasts and also loves uses them and only them, for pan frying fresh fish filets. She dredges the fish in flour, then an egg wash, then the panko crumbs. It always comes out lightly golden, and delicious.
The only thing she uses regular bread crumbs for anymore is for meatballs or meatloaf.
If you eat deep fried shrimp at a Chinese Buffet, it is Panko that makes them so crisp and yet lightly crusted.

I am guilty of eating deep fried foods when we go out, but we sold the deep fryer at a yard sale a few years ago. Kathy saute's and frys only with canola or olive oil. What we save in saturated fat by using those oils, I blow because I don't like margarine and I eat only REAL butter on toast or biscuits. LOL
Can'tcha tell by my slim and trim figure? LOL

We have a Fry Daddy that I put away long ago because it was too easy to quickly deep fry french fries, et al, when a craving came on. I knew I wasn't doing Jim any favors (let alone myself) so I cleaned out the thing & stashed it away.

I have always relished the idea of deep frying a turkey, but I can't justify the costs.
!. about 50 bucks for the fryer unit 2. the cost of propane 3. 15 or 20 bucks worth of oil 4. the cost of rebuilding your entire neighborhood when the damn thing tips over and leaves your neighborhood a smoking, smoldering wasteland.
Hey if eating a few pieces of fried chicken is like taking a pot shot at your heart, just think, eating a 20 pound turkey deep fried must be alike dropping an atom bomb on your entire circulatory system.

I've been hearing a lot of mention lately of Panko and have been thinking of trying them out. Where are they located with the rest of the bread crumbs or in the specialty dept.

It depends on where you shop. I am sure in your area that Wegmans has them readily available. If not with the regular breadcrumbs, most likely in the specialty foods aisle. They are well worth the effort to find them, even if you have to go to an oriental specialty market for them.
I find them here at Kroger's in the oriental foods section with the canned sprouts, water chestnuts and all the other oriental favorites.

Ooo. Asian market. Don't have one of those real close by here. I love the Thai rice noodles that you just soak in boiled water for a few minutes. I love to fix them with chopped up scallions, sliced jalepenos, and a little dash of fish sauce and soy. I buy them at Wally world, but they are not as good as the ones I used to buy in Utica at the Asian market that used to be on Bleecker St.

At Price Chopper they're right with the other bread crumbs. You only get half as much weight-wise for the same price, though they are the same in volume.

Thanks for the info stoney. Chris got me thinking about all the stuff I used to buy at the asian market. Geez. I guess I will have to start making a trip to that store when I come north also. I may have to rent a u-haul just to bring home the groceries by the time we visit the Casa Imports Italian store on Broad St, Pulaski Meat Market, Chantatry's, Holland Farms, Aldi's for chocolate bars, and Star Bakery for tomato pie.
The last time we left Utica, we had the refrigerator in the travel trailer packed to the door, as well as a large ice chest crammed to the rim with meat and goodies from NY State.
Maybe this summer I will be able to catch a few nice fat walleye's and have a little shore dinner with some PANKO breaded filets and fried taters with onions. Hoping to be there a little longer this year if all goes well.
