Dave, I believe even though the State will not do the maintenance or keep any of the facilities open at the Battle field, the public will NOT be prohibited from entering the premises.

Clipper, your post made me think of the news item heard yesterday: Does research into disease, ticks and malt liquor use stimulate the economy?"Americans will pay $783,000 for a study that invites 100 malt liquor and marijuana users in Buffalo to call in and punch numbers on the telephone to record their habits each day. Each will be paid at least $45 for their time." (SUNY Buffalo students expected to be the recipients.) "U.S. taxpayers will pay $162,000 for a study that sends college students into the wild to collect ticks and plant them on lab mice. Another grant will pay $25 each to 100 residents of the Pacific Island of Palau for scientists to draw samples of their blood. The studies are paid for by the $787 billion economic recovery act, an unprecedented effort intended to jump-start the economy, make jobs and modernize the nation's infrastructure, energy independence and health care systems." www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2009/07/us_taxpayers_will_pay_162000.html

The State is $8 billion in the hole. Get it? Cuts have to be made somewhere. But, nobody wants anything cut despite folks always bitching & saying 'the govt. must cut spending'! So, let's do this. Write to the Governor & suggest that he raise state income taxes. That way Oriskany Monument & all the state parks can stay open, cigarette & soda taxes won't go up, & all the sacred cows in everyone's back yard won't be touched. Ya want places like O.M. to stay open? Fine. We'll all pay for it thru higher income tax rates.

Yes, I'm sure this is going to help humungously... The $6.3 million saved through proposed park closures would amount to a fraction of 1 percent of the state’s $8.2 billion budget gap. www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2....te_parks_w.htmlWhy is it that the common person is always the one to suffer, to alter our lifestyles to meet the rules made by elected officials, to make due with less, to pay more income taxes?? I was listening to a commercial last night about the prison closures NNY will be facing. The commercial asked, "Why not start cutting State management jobs instead of closing prisons?" Aren't our prisons already overcrowded? Where are they going to relocate the prisoners to? Our state would rather overcrowd a prison putting prison personnel in danger rather than getting rid of some needless top management positions. Makes about as much sense as BobbieZ's telling us to go trespass and squat (literally) on someone's property to go camping because there will be less campgrounds to utlitize. lol lol

Hmmm. You know, at least a few Indians died there. What do you think the chances are that politicians would close Oriskany Battlefield if the Indians claimed it as a memorial to their dead? We need a champion. Here's a chance for Leon to redeem himself.

. ... trespass and squat (literally) on someone's property to go camping because there will be less campgrounds to utlitize. lol lolDenise, I've been wondering about that. There will undoubtedly be lots of people who will go back to their favorite spots this summer, or at least try to. In fact, I'll bet it will cost more in State Police coverage to keep them out than it would to man the place with regular workers, who by the way, if the state closes the parks, will be joining the ever increasing ranks of the unemployed. If the governor closes the parks, there will be at least a few melées, and the electorate will get pissed off at Albany. Given the numbers (small savings) and the political fallout, closing the parks would be a stupid move. I'll bet it doesn't happen. Kracker, the state doesn't need to raise income taxes. They will continue to do what they've always done, return less to municipalities, who simply raise property taxes. This depresses housing prices, cuts in to consumer spending and lowers sales tax revenue. Vicious circle. Death spiral, actually. Only way to fix it is to curb spending, but that must be done much more intelligently than closing a few parks. Greedy politicians are one problem, state worker and teacher unions are another. BTW, does anyone know how much New York State spends on it's air force?

Raise the income tax? Man, I hope that's tongue in cheek. I'm SOOOO tired of hearing how the people that have done well should somehow support those that don't. It's funny how every one's about Capitalism as long as it's about Wal Mart but Joe Schmuck who has done well should carry the burden? I think not. Let me tell you, I took my family to Boston this weekend. Out of curiosity I paid attention to the taxes I was racking up. Half my trip went to taxes. Alright not quite but they were ridiculous to say the least. I paid $45 in occupancy tax for a weekend. Just to BE in the city. Anyway my point is...some contribute by spending, if you take it in the form of additional income tax where's the spending money? Just another shift. AND while I'm ok with social and health services spending please explain to me how I and my family are responsible for you and yours going camping? This thread was about college and tuition so I'll hit a lil 'bout that. We have two boys and we elected to save with the intention of them being able to make the decision to go wherever they choose. So we save $1000 a month per. That's $24k a year for the next 15 years. So in 15 years that account based upon past performance will be worth about a million. Just enough for 2 kids to go to private school. Here's the kicker. WhyTF should I have to put that money away instead of spending it? Can't I just spend it (hell the government wants to) and when the time comes hope the money's there from the government? That's right, we're white, upper middle class and we actually work for what we want. Guess we don't qualify. Why is some other family more entitled to my pocket than my own? I'm also tired ab out the teachers bit. Any of you that are bitching teach? My wife is a teacher. The whole working 8 months a year bit is bullshit. Calendar year maybe but in hours no way. I watch my wife sit and correct papers EVERY night for at least 2 hours. That's on top of the 8 hours she already spent raising the kids of parents who routinely fail to prepare their children. I've seen her reputation attacked by parents who would rather see the failures of their child blamed on a third party than to accept responsibility. I've consoled her after hearing the stories of neglect and abuse. If you're not a teacher and bitching, go do the job then come back. Additionally she makes $60k a year. With a Master's Degree. Pay in the private sector for that education level is much higher. Free insurance? Nope. The coverage is killer but we pay $800 a month for it. Retirement, guess what? Contrary to popular belief she's paid into it for years and will bank about 50+k a year. How much do you think that'll buy in 20 years? Me, I'd rather pay good money for teachers and boot the High School AD that banks $100k. So I guess the best solution would be to bring in unqualified teachers, pay them squat, expect them to work in an environment that continues to be increasing difficult. You want Unions that hike costs? Call the Teamsters, right Clipper? I don't ever hear people bitching about ever bloated Police Unions and their perks. Guess it's all about the perspective. Opps, looks like some more folks want a Union. www.brownbailout.com/?fbid=JzaXw__45YfThese guys make almost as much as teachers for delivering packages, with no education and minimal driving ability and you guys bitch about teachers.

Denise, don't want to go off the subject again but do want to inform you that going on State land to camp is not trespassing. There is plenty of places you can camp in the woods. Even with the State Parks closed one can camp there free of charge but without the facilities and water. You just have to bring your own. Camping doesn't mean you have to go to a State park to enjoy getting back to nature. ;D

For instance, up at 8th Lake where we always go, they have outhouses for use when they're closed in the winters & the bathrooms are not available. You can still go there free of charge.

Hell of a lot of house for one family isn't it? What the hell, it costs enough to heat that damned place to pay for the maintenance at a couple of state parks for a season.
