I know he won't give the speech until Tuesday night, but if everyone else in the world can anticipate and comment, why not us. I'm hearing (reading, actually) that the Prez will call for an increase of some 30,000 troops, bringing the total in Afghanistan to 100,000. Pundits insist Obama's speech must inform the American people that the reason why we need more troops there is to keep Al Quaeda from doing damage on the streets of America. Fellow Democrat (his, not mine)Senator Jack Reed, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and a West Point graduate, said "I think he has to make a speech that shows that all of our efforts are pointed to our reduced presence in Afghanistan, but I think he has to also indicate again and again how critical this is to our national security." Did that man just say sending another 30,000 men and women will point to our reduced presence in Afghanistan? Yes, he did. So, I have to say, "Huh?" Isn't that what Bush was saying about Iraq (and for all I know, Afghanistan too)? And weren't the Democrats the guys who said that was crazy? Yes, they did. edition.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/11/30/afghan.strategy.backlash/index.htmlThe President can't win this one. The American public is already finished with Afghanistan. On the road to his own legend, Mr. Obama has missed the exit for Camelot.

Dave, I'll be curious if the prez gives the timetables for withdrawing the troops. Let's hope not, otherwise it'll just be a waiting game until we withdraw troops.
I'll be curious what's going to happen in Pakistan also. Will the US end up giving more assistance to Pakistan? It almost appears like the Taliban are creating more elbow room between the two countries.

gski, I'd be surprised if any withdrawal timetables are given. He wouldn't tie himself up with that any more than Bush did. And the real answer is, "Who knows?"

What I'm getting from the news accounts is that the Administration is trying to sell Build Up and Withdraw with a wink to both sides of the aisle. More like Build Up And We'll See.
