You don't. You avoid it by staying out of range, which means you don't get in the other guy's face.

Went to school with Ed and know him now. Maybe he got his chest-bumping from the old days when he was UFA's super star in basketball.

I'm in shock! Doesn't sound like the Ed I knew then or know now who was always very passive, not a trouble maker or a violent man.
