Just returned home from W.Utica's Neighborhood Watch Group meeting and thought I'd make a few comments about these groups and why people should get involved.
Please don't say you're not interested because you live in a better part of the city and your neighborhood is safe. I heard that statement from people who live in other parts of Utica far too many times. Residents from N.Utica were some of those people. At tonight's meeting our director told us that N.Utica was now in need of group and their first meeting was tonight also. He offered our assistance to the N.Utica group in helping to set up their meetings and agendas.
The city of Syracuse are now forming neighborhood groups also to help them combat crime on their streets. I guess now is better then never, but why should an area wait before crimes become obvious in their area. Like I have always stated, the criminal is not going to just stay in Cornhill or W.Utica. Sooner or later, especially since these areas have effective watch-groups, the criminals will move to other areas to do their crimes.
Neighborhood watch-groups assist the police when and where criminal activities are taking place. The police can't possibly be in all places all the time. They need our eyes and ears to help them. We are excellent "watch-dogs" for the police. We watch out for each other in our neighborhoods. That is the only way to combat crime and to push out the undesirables. We get involved to make our streets safe again. We're taking our streets back but we ALL have to get involved no matter where one lives to accomplish this.
