This is a rather interesting case, full of potential arguments regarding the law, the kind of behavior we expect from teachers and the actions we ask of our justice system.Haslett teacher reveals ‘drunk shaming’ by fellow employeesSchool, prosecutors hesitate to take action in incident caught in legal gray area[/b] MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP — A police report that details an evening of troubling incidents among a group of Haslett Public Schools teachers involving drug use and “drunk shaming” is prompting questions about the teachers’ behavior and institutional accountability in this suburban community near East Lansing. The police report addresses a number of incidents that took place at an end-of-year party hosted in 2007 by a Haslett teacher and attended by several other teachers from the district. The police report was provided to Michigan Messenger by one of those teachers, Veronica Piechotte, who says she was victimized by her colleagues that evening and that neither the Haslett school administration nor the legal system had acted on her complaints until Michigan Messenger began its inquiry. According to the account Piechotte gave police the day after the incident, on the last day of school in 2007, Piechotte and five other Haslett school teachers, Lauri Etheridge, Timothy Beebe, Brian Town, Daniel McKinney and Heather Woodworth, joined their colleagues at an East Lansing bar to celebrate the beginning of summer vacation. As the party moved from the bar to McKinney’s house, things took a turn for the worse. The people involved dispute some of what happened during the evening, but each of them spoke with police at the time, providing a contemporaneous, first-hand account. Ralph............that would be a typical reply from a male and is exactly why woman are still being abused. The drunk shaming that happened there went way over the lines of what one would call a joke. And it's only funny if all parties are laughing.

Personally, I can't imagine doing that to anyone. Man or woman. This Irishman still holds a body sacred, if no longer a "tabernacle of the holy ghost."
But I was also thinking about what we expect these days from our teacher corps. Personal freedoms aside for the moment, should a teacher be allowed any conduct, even if legal, that used to be called scandalous? When I was in teachers' college ... admittedly a long time ago ... personal responsibility and the importance of reputation were drilled into us, with the warning that parents would not want their children taught by anyone who had the least hint of wantonness about them.
Times change, I guess, and I wonder what I would be told today by a Principal, were I to complain about a young teacher whose behavior was rumored to be immoral. I have a feeling he'd tell me the teacher's privacy rights superseded my parental expectation to have my child taught by a virtuous adult.

I'll add that if the teachers keep their jobs, I'll be left wondering how a school that no doubt gives a high priority to lecturing kids about bullying can justify continuing to employ teachers who performed the ultimate in bullying. Because "drunk shaming" is a misnomer. It's really about bullying.

After months of searching for a home in the Lansing area, my son & daughter-in-law purchased a home in Haslett 11 months ago. One of the factors in their decision was the outstanding reputation of the Haslett School District. Even though my granddaughter won't be entering kindergarten for 3 more years, they wanted to be sure they were doing the right thing.
If it is acceptable for teachers to behave like juvenile bullies, what can we expect from the kids?

CB, quite a coincidence. I'd be interested to know their reaction to the story. Are they sorry about landing in the Haslett District, or do they feel it was an isolated incident that doesn't really affect them? "If it is acceptable for teachers to behave like juvenile bullies, what can we expect from the kids?" And I suppose the same question can be asked in regard to teachers smoking pot and getting drunk enough to start writing on each other. And there are a few more issues here.

Chris, I mean no insult or offense to anyone by saying what I said, especially women. I have seen much the same happen with males on campus as well as off....such as this. I do not condone such "shaming" stunts, because in my opinion, all parties concerned are idiots to some degree. I had a male friend of mine a few years ago go out on one of his drunken binges and wound up coming home with a tattoo the likes of which I to this day have not figured out how he explained to his wife. My only opinion is that (man or woman), if you're gonna play........you better expect to pay sooner or later.

Warning also applies to dogowners with small children: Please read! If you are an owner of a dog or know someone who has a dog which belongs to a 'dangerous breed' category, or if you have a child visiting your house, please take this as a warning. Don't leave your dog with any small child unattended under any circumstances! Only one little moment was enough for the following to happen. See the photo below! " !" !" !" !" !"!"!"!"

I have to wonder why the teachers are still teaching. Do they not drug test teachers, and require that they use no illicit drugs?
While I won't take a holier than thou stand against the smoking of pot, I will say that if you have a job that requires you to not use drugs, then smoking pot should be reason for dismissal. I was a truck driver that had to take a urine test periodically, and it was a known fact that THC in your urine was against the law as well as reason for firing. It was a simple principal to master. If you drive a truck, don't smoke weed, even on the weekends. Duhhh!
For people that most likely hold a master's degree in education, it seems just plain stupid and irresponsible of them all to get so damned drunk and stoned as to be passing out on the floor, or to be writing on someone with a sharpy. What a bunch of morons! They should all be fired, including the sleeping beauty that got tatooed with markers. Can anyone honestly say that they would be comfortable with this kind of teacher influencing your impressionable child?
