'Was the building the old Crane Hill School at the Marcy State Hospital?
It looks like the steam plant that is seen over the top of the roof.

I think I'm out of this one. (unfamiliar territory for me) I think it's in West Utica someplace. Like around where Mele's is or was, just past there but in the vicinity. I am only familiar with E. Utica mostly and the main drags to West Utica.

I think Clipper is correct. But upon Bing-ing it, I found Broadacres is gone! Plowed under.

Maybe its gone but not necessarily out of the picture. D didn't say existing just name location and bonus the name of the building so Broaddacres and the Children's Building. It could be an old foto before it went.

The view of the hills in the background led me to believe it was either The Marcy State Hospital grounds (now a prison) or possibly Broadacres, but then I remembered that Broadacres has been demolished. You are right Chris. It could be an older picture of the broadacres campus although my memory of the Broadacres grounds seem to remember the road or drive in front of the buildings being wider and I don't remember them putting metal roofing on the buildings at Broadacres prior to demolishing the place.

Leading me to believe that the buildings are no longer there.
I vote for Broadacres.

You are right Chris. Nowhere else in the area is there a building like that, in that obviously "North of the city" location, with that hill on the horizon, other than Marcy and Broadacres, and after looking at aerial photos of Marcy (Midstate Correctional Facility), I have to rule that place out. It all has built up or asphalt shingle roofs.
I am not that familiar with Broadacres so I would not know any building names or what they were used for. I seem to remember a juvenile detention facility for troubled youth of some sort being there at one time. Is that what you refer to as the "children's building"?

Where ever it is it has to be on the outskirts of the city to capture hills in the background. Chrildren's bldg also named Jensen Hall apart of Broadacres I know nothing about except it was used for TB and then a SNF but I never personally was there ever when I lived in Utica. Here are some neat photos of the place I came upon.... www.uer.ca/locations/show.asp?locid=20673Seems that not too many people own cameras in Utica (or don't post fotos) I always come up empty handed when doing search for Utica. Come on you locals how about it. Even the historical society is limited. If you are interested in seeing any place in Rochester I'll bet there is a foto of it. For Christmas ask for a camera. Lets see some documentations out there. Enough about Food

Excellent research Chris. The photo of Jensen Hall pretty much matches the photo posted by d. I am going back to those sites and see what else I can learn about Broadacres. I am sure it has had an interesting history. You have peaked my curiosity. Thanks.

I just went back an looked at all the pictures in the gallery that you linked us to. I am glad that Shadow has some pictures of the building before it fell into decay and became a target for vandals.
One of the galleries shows a bunch of poker machines and slots. I wonder what the story was with that? LOL
They were beautiful old buildings in their time, but fell into disrepair and were too expensive to maintain. Asbestos abatement would have been a fortune by itself, and must have cost a mint, even to rid the buildings of it when they were torn down. Lots of overhead steam lines in the hallways with exposed asbestos insulation.

the only thing thowing me is the red door and the windows aren't smashed or missing. If it is Jensen Hall or part of Broadacres then it has to be a photo taken from long ago. (or D did some photoshop editing)

Yeah, you're right. Exact match! Broadacres Building No. 2, Jensen Hall. Here it is from the gallery Chris pointed to:

Apologies to D for mucking with his photo, but I zoomed in, took away some of the reds (and the beauty) of the photo, and supered the Urban Explorer photo. You can see windows boarded up on either side of the door. One of the main front doors is white and the other may be covered with a piece of plywood in this photo. In the UER photo, both doors are obviously white. In D's photo, only one is white, the other looks to be covered with plywood which reddened up either in the low angle of sunlight or in the "printing" process. This does show that D's photos are more than snapping pictures. They're art.
