It seems that the National Mall is in bad shape and in need of repairs and reseeding, among with algae control, weed control, and concrete sidewalk repairs.
AP EXCLUSIVE: Vietnam memorial fund takes over care of 13 acres of weed-infested National Mall
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The foundation that built the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is taking over lawn care for more than 13 acres on the National Mall around the monument.
Officials with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund say they were spurred to act by an Associated Press investigation. That investigation found the mall has been at a disadvantage in competing for extra funds doled out by lawmakers, compared with sites that are represented by powerful members of Congress.
The Vietnam fund plans to spend $96,000 in the coming months to repair a broken irrigation system and improve the grass through weed treatment, fertilization, aeration and other work. Fund President Jan C. Scruggs tells AP that his group intends to continue to maintain the grass in the future.
The irrigation repairs are scheduled to begin Thursday.

Leave it to a bunch of lowlife, greedy politicians to send all the money home in the form of pork, while neglecting the National Mall, one of the prettiest and most photographed sites in our nation's capital.
It leaves me fearful of where the country is going, when even the nation's capital is being neglected and allowed to fall into decay. I guess the Viet Nam Veteran's Memorial folks will have to stimulate growth of grass and inhibit growth of weeds while the politicians stimulate the growth of large corporations with our tax money while giving the American taxpayer a large dose of fertilizer in the form of political BS.
It is really quite sad that a group of family members of those that lost their lives in Viet Nam, and the comrades that fought along with them, have to maintain the area around their own memorial.
Viet Nam veterans are used to being "forgotten", but are we now going to "forget" George Washington, Abe Lincoln and all of the others memorialized on the National Mall?
Personally I think it is time to do a little "weed control" in the voting booth and remove some of the "unwanted species" on Capital Hill.
While the idea of sending moneys such as the 2 million that Utica just received for downtown improvements is great in theory, I would bet that in cities across the country, most of those funds will be tucked into the pockets of developers that are patrons and relatives of the city leaders and administrations. Gee, I hate to sound suspicious, but some of it may end up in the pockets of the city leaders that are in charge of distributing it in the form of kickbacks and favors.
In the mean time, Washington DC is growing weeds. That must look wonderful to visiting dignitaries and foreign tourists, as well as to our own children visiting our nation's capital.
My God, even the smallest of cities maintains and grooms it's parks.
