Relocated Post started by rodwilsonwww.uticaod.com/homepage/x1528791463/Council-to-consider-Utica-police-station-facade-improvementsYou have got to be kidding me. Is it just me or is this really some of the craziest shit ever seen. Are these guys really that stupid to think that they won't get dragged out into the streets for this after the James St. substation deal? Rod, Sorry to sort of steal this away, but I thought this was too good to leave in the other thread. Think this may get bigger as it goes!

It is a structural problem so I guess it is better to be pro-active. All this city really needs is to re-build all of its infrastructure, other than that nothing else should matter. If I was mayor that would be all that I would do.

Has there been any clue on what the structural problem is? With all the dollars spent over the last few years on the ever growing public safety complex, how could a serious structural problem have been missed.
I do remember talking to a general contractor when the court building was constructed on the east side of the police station. He claimed that he and several other builders refused to bid on the job because he felt that excavation would destabilize the police station & he didn't want the liability.

Isn't there a small river running underground somewhere through there? Or is my memory playing tricks on me?

I can't remember how far out Oriskany Blvd the police station is. A creek will no doubt show on the 1883 map, if it exists/existed. Utica built over a few streams and sent them underground. If you'll tell me the the cross streets, I'll look it up on the NYPL map.

With all the money that has been spent, and continues to be spent on the carnival down there, let’s call it quits.
During the last ten years we have spent, spent, spent and SPENT on the area down there until damn near ¼ of a mile of it belongs to the UPD. In the process we have managed to tear up historical buildings and alienate on of the oldest businesses in town.
And we pay day-by-day (or should I say night-by-night) to keep the damn place lit up like Yankee Stadium!!
While I would never take anything away from the PD, or any other branch of local law enforcement, there comes a time when we need to say NO. The place is a dump, has been a dump, will be a dump no matter how many band-aids we put on it. I would rather see my tax dollars spent to build a new station or relocate the present one…..though NOW is not the time for a new building.
City Hall has more space than you think, City Center has space, Adirondack Building has space, there are many City owned properties that have space.
If the County can lease Insight House their building for $1.00 a year……why can’t we grab it out of their hands for $5.00 a year? Helluva profit for the County!!!! ;D

The lease runs through 2033, if memory serves.

Possible the UPD building is over the remnants of the canal, I suppose. The Chenango canal comes up from the south and intersects the Erie west past Cornelia Street. Today's Arterial roughly follows its route. If you can make it out on this terrain map, something seems to be meandering about to the south, presumably underground today, but I'd guess the UPD is uphill from it
