Robber gets 8.5 years in state prison for holding up Xtra MartWKTV News(WKTV) - A Frankfort man convicted in the robbery of an Xtra Mart in Ilion is heading to state prison. Angel Lopez Jr., 51, was arrested back on December 11th following an incident at the Ilion Xtra Mart on West Main St. Police say Lopez showed a weapon , demanded cash and fled on foot. He was arrested a short time later. Now, Lopez jr. has been sentenced to 8.5 years in state prison and five years post release supervision after being convicted of 1st degree robbery. At the risk of appearing a bleeding-heart liberal, and with full recognition of the possibility that the court finally put away a person who led a life of crime, does some little bell ring in the back of your mind about a politician or businessman here or there who stole millions .... even billions in today's world ... and is today sitting comfortably in his penthouse, subject to visits by the police only when his squad of attorneys allow and only when his butler admits them?
I guess I'm feeling a little flummoxed today by the inequalities of life, because yesterday morning I agreed to pay a hardworking young man $400 to spend the entire two days of his weekend painting one side of my house and my decks, and in the afternoon agreed to pay a dental surgeon $1200 for 45 minutes work on a tooth. Just doesn't add up.

Just a thought:
In a pinch your dentist could probably paint your deck but would you want your painter doing your root canal?
I think I single-handedly financed my dentist's last cruise, but he did do a nice job of implanting a titanium stud in my jaw without penetrating into my sinus. Not easy when putting 6.5 mm of stud into 5 mm of bone.

Sounds not only expensive, but also painful Clarence.
There ARE advantages to having a "big mouth." In my case they probably could have gotten away with a standard 2"x4"x8' stud rather than that expensive titanium baby. They just would have to change the wooden one periodically to prevent termite infestation.

I was quite proud of myself that I didn't run, screaming, from the room when the procedure was explained.
He had to drill to but not through the membrane which separates the upper jaw from the sinus, stopping twice for x-rays to establish in 3D the position of the drill relative to the sinus. I spent the rest of the day with an ice-pack on my face.
Subsequent procedures were a breeze because of the skill and precision of that procedure, I paid him a bunch but it was well spent.

We complain about the price of medical care, but the skill required to perform some procedures is "priceless." My dad had a deep brain stimulator inserted deep into his brain to stop his tremors. It was an amazing procedure, and that also was done using Xray to track their instrument locations so as not to paralyze or kill him.
Have a great day Clarence. I have my little share of titanium in my back. I guess we all have to have a little metal in our lives as we age? Hmm.

Not sure if it is appropriate for Father's Day.
In 1994 my father was in a devasting auto accident, shattered both legs (in typical fashion he called my mother from an ER mid-way between MN & NY to tell her he'd "hurt his foot").
With all the metal (plates, screws, what not) he can no longer go through metal detectors.
A few years later my daughter was looking at x-rays of his legs. She gets her sense of humor from some unknown places and knows his reputation for re-using everything. Whith her best innocent look, she asked, "Grandpa does this mean when you die we have to recycle you?"

"Grandpa does this mean when you die we have to recycle you?"
Don't know, but it MIGHT mean you can be recalled even after you pass away.
I guess I'm still experiencing Dental Sticker Shock. Seems like every time I visit, I'm hit with a procedure that costs a grand or a good portion of one. Of course, I will admit that both I and my teeth have long passed the stage of "a cavity or two each year." Now there are root canals, apicos and artifices. None are cheap, and the difficult ones are done by the thousand-dollars-an-hour guys.
But I can't imagine suffering with tooth pain because I couldn't afford a procedure. I can't imagine it, but people do it every day. Maybe the young guy who's going to do my painting.
