Here we go again. We once more will take it in the shorts for the short sighted dealings of the now deceased eccentric. Hanna put us in the Hotel Utica mess, the Marina on the canal, and now the Adirondack Bank Building tax debacles, that we will pay for for years. I predict that Roefaro's first inclination will be to "pass the gravy boat" once more, and beg Clark to stay in the building.
In the comment section on the OD homepage, there is a comment suggesting that the city simply let Gaetano and Clark both hit the road, tear the damn buildings down, and take the bite as a lesson hard learned.
There is something simply WRONG about taxpayers subsidizing the financing of real estate for these rich buffoons. There is something wrong with a mayor and councilman that cowtow to the money and desert the best interest of the average citizen that put them in office.
Just think how wonderful the impact would be, to the childhood obesity problem, if Tom Clark were to lose his ass and end up bankrupt. Close up the McDonalds in the area, and there would only be a few hundred greasy fast food joints left, haha.
The only one that would suffer would be his favorite charity, the children at the House of Good Shepard, where he has spent a lot of money making it better for children that have fallen through the cracks.
If Clark is allowed to walk away from this a victor, he should be jailed. He bought a building for $1. He knows that he was expected to eventually pay the taxes on the building, and now he wants to bail.
The ulitimate miscarriage of justice will be if he is allowed to purchase the Stetson Harza building, and receive some more tax incentives. He is a crook. He has showed his crooked ass and black heart to the world and deserves NO MORE tax breaks until he proves to the taxpayer that he is WORTHY of our respect and support.
I am a believer that if the restaurant at the marina goes boobies up one more time, it should be turned into city offices of some sort, so at least we get some productive use out of the building. I mean let's face it. Who wants to sit on a patio eating dinner, while looking across the canal at a "scenic used car lot" and the trash plugged Reels Creek mouth? I am a believer that if the city wanted to do something productive, they should have bought the old Howard Johnson and Country Squire property and made THAT into a park and marina. The present marina lacks in ambience when the state DOT trucks come rumbling down the ramp to go to their garage, wafting diesel exhaust over your dinner plate.
I don't profess to know the answers to downtown's problems, but I DO know this. It should not be up to the taxpayers to sit quietly by while city government GIVES the real estate away, and forces the taxpayers to pick up the tab, while the Mayor's patrons and friends take the money and run.
I may be overly vindictive, but I would rather see that beautiful and historic old bank building reduced to rubble, than to see some rich dude getting it for "free", while pocketing the rents that he receives from the tenants, lured and obtained as a result of the city's original $700,000 in improvements.
